MONTEREY PARK, Calif., -- For the first time in program history, the No. 25 Cal State East Bay Pioneer Swim Team were named back-to-back champions of the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference.
The Pioneers captured their first three event victories Saturday to close out the four-day championship meet with 1,354.5 points, pulling away from second-place Pepperdine to win by 41 points.
Peyton Wayment earned CSUEB's first top-place finish of the championship week in the 1650 Freestyle to start Saturday's evening program.
Victoria Zukeran then won the 200 Fly,
Allie Klinger took first place in the 100 Free and the foursome of
Kelee Shimizu,
Isabel Rishwain,
Morgan Frank and
Allie Klinger took the 400 Freestyle Relay title.
Despite not accruing any diving points, the Pioneers proved themselves to be the deepest squad in the 14-team field.
The Pioneers had four athletes score in the longest race of the meet, the 1650 Free. Wayment obliterated the rest of the field, winning the mile race by more than 16 seconds. Her time of 17:04.65 lowers her own program record, which she set at the 2019 Championship Meet.
Leah Robinson followed with a third place finish at 17:24.68,
Landry Walker collected fifth place in a time of 17:32.71 and
Maddie Wittkowske was right behind her in sixth with a time of 17:33.49.
Alondra Ortiz paced the Pioneers in the 200 Backstroke with a third place finish in 2:04.30. They also had a pair of swimmers score in the "B" Final, as
Paige Branson took 11th and
Katrionna Furness placed 16th.
Allie Klinger was crowned PCSC Champion in the 100 Free finishing in a time of 51.24. Shimizu and Rishwain touched the wall back-to-back to score fourth and fifth place points.
Serene Augustain finished 13th in the "B" Final and Abigial Mitchell scored 18th place points in the "C" Final.
Rebecca Bay qualified for the "A" Final in her second breaststroke event of the meet, earning a sixth place finish in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:24.30.
The next event was the 200 Fly, which saw
Victoria Zukeran out-touch Azusa Pacific's Sydney Benveniste to claim the conference title and broke her own school record with her time of 2:04.14.
Sofia Moufarrej also notched an "A" Final fourth place finish in a time of 2:08.86. Shimizu scored in the "B" Final as well for the Pioneers, taking 15th place.
The Pioneers closed out the meet and clinched their championship with a first place finish in the 400 Freestyle Relay. The foursome of Shimizu, RIshwain, Frank, and Klinger edged out Pepperdine and posted a time of 3:32.17.
After taking some time to celebrating this historic accomplishment, East Bay will next look ahead to NCAA Division II Championships in March. Several Pioneers will await the national qualifier announcement.
