MONTEREY PARK, Calif., --
The No. 25 Cal State East Bay swim team had a tremendous day at East Los Angeles College during the second session of the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PCSC) Championships to take over first place in the team standings.

The Pioneers have a total of 517.5 points at the midway point of the four-day meet, but still have a tight battle ahead of them. They'll head into Friday's session just 21 points ahead of second-place Pepperdine, 107.5 points ahead of Azuza Pacific, and 144.5 points ahead of Biola.

Thursday's program started with the 500 Freestyle, during which CSUEB showed off its impressive depth by qualifying four swimmers into the "A" Final and boasting four of the top eight overall finishers. Leah Robinson led the way with a second place finish and a time of 4:59.11. For the second consecutive day Robinson set a new school record. Serene Augustain was right behind her in third place as she also set a new lifetime best with a time of 4:59.19. Peyton Wayment scored fifth place points and Morgan Frank turned in an impressive effort tallying eight and posting a time of 5:08.30.

"Once again our first race of the evening set the tone for the entire night," explained East Bay head coach Shane Pelton. "All 4 of the women in the 500 really stepped up and raced great tonight. Serene and Leah battled every step of the way to both break the school record. They really put together excellent race strategies. Hats off to Kellyn (Biola) who put together a phenomenal race to pull out the win."

That was followed by the 200 Individual Medley, and the Pioneers were once again well-represented in the "A" Final with a one qualifier. Victoria Zukeran led the way with an eighth place finish in a time of 2:09.12. Rebecca Bay took 14th and Abigail Mitchell scored 22nd place points.

East Bay nearly captured its first individual victory of the meet in the 50 Freestyle. Senior Allie Klinger secured a second place finish in a time of 23.29 as she was narrowly out-sprinted to the wall by FPU's Arianne Kooijinga with a time of 23.28. Despite not getting the victory, Klinger set he new school record for the 50 Free. Isabel Rishwain qualified for the "A" final as she tied Pepperdine's Jasmine Williams for seventh place in a time of 22.50. Lauren Ostrander and Katrionna Furness secured "B" Final finishes as Ostrander notched 10th place in a time of 24.35 and Furness scored 14th place points. Tori Padilla compiled a 23rd place finish to help extend the Pioneer lead.

"Allie is dialed in right now," expressed Pelton. "She is swimming like a true professional. Two school records in two days and she is only getting better!"

The last race of the day resulted in an extremely tight finish as the Pioneers notched another second place again. The foursome of Klinger, Rishwain, Augustain and Robinson were edged out for the conference title by less than a second by Pepperdine. Klinger, Rishwain and Augustain turned in splits of 23.42 and 23.81, respectively.

"I think the team has put itself in an excellent position for the duration of the championship," added Pelton. "We pride ourselves on getting better each day and I believe we are going to exactly that. Our depth has shown and I think it will continue to show over the next two days."

There are still 13 swim events and one diving event to be contested over the final two days in Monterey Park. Friday's session includes the 3-Meter Diving finals, followed by the 100 Butterfly, 400 Individual Medley, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke, and 400 Medley Relay.
