MONTEREY PARK, Calif., --
No. 25 Cal State East Bay swim team is off to a solid start after one day at the 2019-20 Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships at East Los Angeles College.

Freshman Leah Robinson and junior Peyton Wayment got the championship meet off to a strong start in the opening event, notching a runner-up and third place finish in the 1000 Freestyle. Robinson's time of 10.15.43 set a new-school record for the 1000 Free and is currently 15th fastest in the country. Wayment's time of 10:20.34 broke her own school record and was a personal best.

The Pioneers had six scoring swimmers in that event, Maddie Wittkowske took sixth place, Morgan Frank captured seventh place, Landry Walker finished 11th and Sofia Moufarrej placed 14th. In total, Wittkowske, Frank, Landry and Moufarrej all swam to lifetime best times in the event.

"We couldn't have asked for a better start to the meet than with all the 1000 Freestylers," expressed CSUEB head coach Shane Pelton. "All the women stepped up huge and raced incredibly well. I don't think I have ever had one race go so well to start a championship meet in my coaching career at East Bay."

The next race was the 200 Medley Relay, which saw an extremely close finish among the top five teams. The CSUEB foursome of Lauren Ostrander, Tori Padilla, Victoria Zukeran and Allie Klinger finished in fourth place with a time of 1:45.33.

Earlier in the day, Klinger time trialed the 100 Free and broke her school record with a time of 50.57. Her time is 10th best in the country and should qualify for the NCAA Championship.

The final event of the evening was the 800 Freestyle Relay, which Pepperdine won very closely, narrowly out-pacing the East Bay by just one second. The quartet of Serene Augustain, Kelee Shimizu, Wittkowske and Isabel Rishwain secured a impressive second place finish with a time of 7:34.63.

"The relays were incredibly competitive and our team did a great job of battling tonight," explained Pelton. "We had some monster splits and efforts and I really do believe we are going to continue to get better as the meet progresses. We put ourselves in great position after night one."

There is still a long way to go at the championship meet, with 17 swim events scheduled over the next three days. Thursday's program features the 500 Freestyle, 200 Individual Medley, 50 Freestyle, and 200 Freestyle Relay with prelims in the morning and event finals in the evening.
