ROHNERT PARK, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team swept their road doubleheader over Sonoma State on Friday afternoon, April 19 at Seawolf Diamond.

With the win, East Bay improves to 17-23 overall on the season with a 14-20 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action.

In the opening game of the doubleheader the Pioneers used a late game rally to take the game into extra innings where
Omar Sanchez (Winton, Calif.) scored the go-ahead run on a
Dakota Conners (Manteca, Calif.) sacrifice fly to right field as East Bay picked up a 9-8 victory.
Â
It was the third and most important run of the game for Sanchez as he finished with one hit in the ballgame. Conner also scored three runs as well to go along with two hits, including a double and two RBI.

Mark Woinrowicz (W, 1-2) (Yorba Linda, Calif.) entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning and secure the win after not allowing any runs and only giving up two hits.

Similar to the series opener it wasn't the team with the most hits that picked up the win as Sonoma out hit East Bay 13-10 for the game. But the Pioneers did however six errors from the home team Seawolves

East Bay compiled a flurry of runs in the second inning sparked by a
Robert Lujan (Reno, Nev.) single through the right side to lead off the inning. Then an error by SSU put Lujan across the plate for the Pioneers first run of the game and Sanchez on first base with CSUEB ahead 1-0. Then a double from
Matt Cantelme (Fair Oaks, Calif.) moved Sanchez into scoring position at third. Sanchez and Cantelme scored to give the Pioneers a 3-0 leads after an another Seawolf error in the infield.
Steve Robinson (Yuba City, Calif.) concluded the inning with an RBI single to right field to give
Dakota Conners his first run of the game as East Bay entered the bottom of the second with a 4-0 lead.

The Seawloves responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second to cut the lead down to 4-2.

But in the top off the fourth inning Sanchez, Conners and Robinson showed up again as
Omar Sanchez singled through the left side and advanced to second on an error. Then
Matt Cantelme moved Sanchez to third base on the sacrifice bunt. Then
Dakota Conners smacked a bases clearing double down the left field line to score Sanchez. In the next at bat
Steve Robinson singled up the middle to bring home Conners and give East Bay a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Sonoma again would answer the East Bay with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, another run in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-6 advantage over the Pios.

In the final inning of action with two outs on the board and the Seawolves clinging to an 8-6 lead,
Dakota Conners stepped to the plate and single through the right side to get things started for CSUEB.
Steve Robinson was hit by pitch and
Ryan McSwain (Redwood City, Calif.) was walked in the next at bat to load the bases for the Pioneers. Then senior outfielder
Kyosuke Ushimaru (Tokyo, Japan) crushed a two-run single to left field bringing home Conners and Robinson to lock at game at 8-8.

Steve Robinson tallied two hits, an RBI while scoring a run and Kyoskue Ushimiaru added two hits and two RBIs.
Robert Lujan notched a hit and scored a run while
Matt Cantelme chipped in a double and a run scored.

Dylan Dudley (Newman, Calif.) got the start on the mound for East Bay and paced the team with three punch outs through five innings of work.
Ethan Brodsky (Mission Viejo, Calif.) allowed one hit in his lone appearance on the mound.
Michael Espino (South San Francisco, Calif.) recorded a strikeout with no runs on hits given up.
Matt Woinarowicz (Yorba Linda, Calif.) also notched a strikeout in his only inning of play on the mound.

In the doubleheader finale, the Pioneers were once again out-hit by the host team Seawolves 8-7.

This ballgame was a pitching duel between
Brian Martinez (Livermore, Calif.) and Dominic Garihan as both hurlers went the distance. For Martinez it was his CCAA-leading fifth complete game of the season as he finished with four strikeouts and only gave up one earned run.

In this contest it was Sonoma State who jumped on the board first with run in the bottom of the opening inning of action. But East Bay answered with a run of their own in the second inning.

The run was a solo home run to left field by
Robert Lujan to knot the game at 1-1. For Lujan it was his first career homer as a Pioneer as he finished with a hit, an RBI and a run scored.
Â
But the Pioneers replied with a run in the top of the second inning and three more runs in the top of sixth inning to claim 4-1 lead.

Matt Cantelme was walked to lead off the inning and
Paul Bryniarski (Fountain Hills, Calif.) replaced him as a pinch runner. Brynarski advanced on a fielder's choice and then
Steve Robinson popped an RBI single to right field to score Bryniarski. In the next at bat,
Ryan McSwain followed with a single to right field to bring home Robinson.
Kyosuke Ushimaru stepped up and belted an RBI single to right field to score McSwain as the Pioneers took a 4-1 advantage.

The Seawolves tried to put together one final effort to comeback but their rally fell short as Cal State East Bay completed the doubleheader sweep.

Ryan McSwain chipped in a hit, an RBI and scored a run.
Kyosuke Ushimaru logged a hit and a RBI.
Adam Hollar (Livermore, Calif.) and
Omar Sanchez both recorded hits and
Paul Bryniarski scored a run.

The Pioneers will conclude their four-game series against the Seawolves with single game Saturday morning, April 20 with opening pitch schedule for 11:00 a.m.
