East Bay Baseball Outlasts Sonoma State Behind Late Inning Rally to Claim 3-1 Series Victory

ROHNERT PARK, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team once again showed great late game fight and prowess as the garnered a 3-1 series victory over Sonoma State with a 7-6 victory at Seawolf diamond.
 
The Pioneers have now won three consecutive games for the third time this season as the now sit 18-23 overall with a 15-20 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. As with every game in this series the team with the most hits did not end the ballgame with a win.
 
The Pioneer feel behind early after the Seawolves opened the game with a four-run advantage in the bottom of the opening inning. The CUSEB showed resolve and answered with runs through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
 
East Bay entered the final inning of the series trailing Sonoma State 5-4 when Omar Sanchez (Winton, Calif.) started the rally with a opposite field single down the side. In the next at bat Matt Cantelme (Fair Oaks, Calif.) belted a single down the right field line to put Sanchez into scoring position. After Brock Bueno (Salinas, Calif.) subbed in for Cantelme at second base, junior Jacob Eder (Prescott, Calif.) knocked an RBI double down the left field line to tie the game at 5-5 after Sanchez crossed the plate.
 
Then after Dakota Conners (Manteca, Calif.) was walked fellow senior Steve Robinson (Yuba City, Calif.) stepped up and knocked the go-ahead two-run double down the left field line, scoring Bueno and Eder to put the Pioneers ahead 7-5.
 
Mark Woinarowicz (W, 2-2) (Yorba Linda, Calif.) notched his second win of the series as took the mound in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs and closed the ball game with a strikeout and only one hit given up. His lone strikeout was the final out of the contest.
 
Steve Robinson paced the Pioneers with three RBIs, an extra base hit and a run scored. Robert Lujan (Reno, Nev.) also racked up a multi-RBI game after his fourth inning double down the left line broke a scoreless outing for East Bay.
 
Omar Sanchez tallied a hit and scored a run, both in the ninth inning and Jacob Eder finished with his third double and ninth RBI of the season with a run scored. Kyosuke Ushimaru (Tokyo, Japan) scored a run and drew a walk, Ryan McSwain (Redwood City, Calif.), Brock Bueno and Nicholas Enrico (Honolulu, Hawaii) all scored a run.
 
Kyle Basch (San Carlos, Calif.) got the start on the mound and logged two punch outs through three innings. Matt Woinarowicz (Yorba Linda, Calif., AJ Rouco Bloomfield, Colo.) and Ransome Alexander (Fullerton, Calif.) both saw action next on the mound as the platooned through the fourth inning. Ethan Brodsky (Mission Viejo, Calif.) notched a strikeout in just a little over an inning of action.
 
The Pioneers will return home of a make game against Chico State on Tuesday, April 23 before hitting the road to Southern California for a four game series against Cal State L.A.
