Pioneer Baseball Pummels Wildcats 10-4 in Tuesday Makeup Meeting

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team captured their fourth straight win with a convincing, 10-4 victory over Chico State, Tuesday afternoon, April 23 at Pioneer Baseball Field.

The teams played a rescheduled makeup contest after their series in March was delayed because of in climate weather. This is also the second time this season the Pioneers have won four consecutive wins.

With the win, East Bay avoids the series sweep as they improve to 19-23 on the season with a 16-20 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action. CSUEB also broke their .500 record at home as they now sit 11-10 at games played at Pioneer Field.

The game started out slow as both offenses struggled to get a bead on either starting pitcher. Brian Martinez (Livermore, Calif.) got the start on the mound and tossed the first three innings on the ball game. Martinez finished with a strikeout and only two hits and an earned run given up.

The Pioneers began to break out the bats in the bottom of the third inning trailing the Wildcats 1-0. After an Jacob Eder (Prescott, Calif.) walk and with two outs on the board senior Steve Robinson (Yuba City, Calif.) stepped up to the plate an delivered first run of the game with an RBI double to left field to lock the game at 1-1.

That would not be the end of Steve Robinson's huge day on the diamond as he finished with three hits, including two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. Robinson leads the Pioneers with 16 doubles, which is good for third in the CCAA. Eder compiled a hit, a run scored and drew two walks.

In the fourth inning, Dylan Dudley (W, 3-2) (Newman, Calif.) took the mound for East Bay and hurled a tremendous game. Dudley racked up three punch outs en route to notching his third win of the season. Dudley only gave up two hits and two runs scored.

The Pioneers would continue their offensive punch with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. East Bay kept on adding runs with two outs on the board as Dakota Conners (Manteca, Calif.) singled up the middle to get things started for CSUEB. After Ryan McSwain (Redwood City, Calif.), in the next at bat senior Kyosuke Ushimaru (Tokyo, Japan) slapped a double through the right side bringing home both Conners and McSwain with the help of a throwing error by Chico State.

Dakota Conners tallied a hit, an RBI and scored two runs for East Bay and Ryan McSwain also added two runs, a hit and an RBI. Kyosuke Ushimaru had a stellar performance as he tied a season-high mark with five RBIs to go along with two hits, including a double.

After the Wildcats attempted to fight back with two runs in the top of the seventh inning, the Pioneers responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh and four more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 10-3 advantage.

Sophomore closer Mark Woinarowicz (S, 6) (Yorba Linda, Calif.) secured his sixth save of the season after he replaced Dylan Dudley on the mound midway through the seventh inning and carried the Pioneers through the end of the outing. Woinarowicz added a strikeout and did not allow any earned runs.

Omar Sanchez (Winton, Calif.) logged a hit and scored a run for East Bay. Matt Cantelme (Fair Oaks, Calif.) added a hit and drew a walk. Adam Hollar (Livermore, Calif.) recorded a hit and Robert Lujan (Reno, Nev.) stole two bases and drew a walk.

The Pioneers will hit the road this weekend with a four-game road series against Cal State L.A. at Reeder Field.
