SAN MARCOS, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team split their series opening doubleheader against Cal State San Marcos Saturday afternoon, February 16 at CSUSM Baseball Field.

The Pioneers and Cougars originally had their Friday matchup postponed due to weather conditions and decided to play two doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. With the Saturday series split the Pioneers move to 4-3 on the season with a 1-1 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action.

The series opening game with a forgettable one for the Pioneers as they were crushed 18-2 by the home team Cougars.
Dylan Dudley (Newman, Calif.) (L, 1-1) got the start on the mound and retired three batters through four innings.

East Bay registered seven hits in the contest while compiling four errors.
Dakota Conners (Manteca, Calif.),
Steve Robinson (Yuba City, Calif.) and
Kyosuke Ushimaru (Tokyo, Japan) all led the Pioneers with two hits apiece. Conners notched his first triple of the season. Robinson tallied two doubles and a RBI through his three at bats. Ushimaru recorded a double and a stolen base for CSUEB.

East Bay fell behind 6-0 after five innings and then the Cougars erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh. The top of the seventh inning is when the Pioneers finally broke their scoreless contest.
Ryan McSwain (Redwood City, Calif.) scored the Pioneers first run of the game as he finished the contest with a hit and a run scored.
Brock Bueno (Salinas, Calif.) scored East Bay's only other run of the game.
Jacob Eder (Prescott, Ariz.) also stole a base.

Matt Woinarowicz (Yorba Linda, Calif.) racked up a three strikeouts through two innings.
Ethan Brodsky (Mission Viejo, Calif.) also saw two innings of action and logged one strikeout.

In the final game of the day the Pioneers bounced back to pick up a 6-5 victory over the Cougars. After two scoreless innings to start the game, Cal State East Bay sparked off a five run third inning.

Starting pitcher
Brian Martinez (W, 1-0) (Livermore, Calif.) was dominate through six innings of action. Martinez struck out six Cougars while only allowing one earned run.
Mark Woinarowicz (S, 1) (Yorba Linda, Calif.) garnered the save after not allowing any hits nor runs through his only inning of work.

Four different Pioneers notched multi-hit games led by two hits and two runs scored by
Dakota Conners. Conners also stole two bases with a RBI and a triple, his second of the season.
Ryan McSwain collected two doubles and scored a run. Senior
Adam Hollar (Livermore, Calif.) finished the ball game with a run scored, two stolen bases and a RBI.
Matt Cantelme (Fair Oaks, Calif.) added a RBI.

Steve Robinson hit and double that led to a run scored and then scored a run of his own.
Kyosuke Ushimaru also notched a hit with a RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.
Ryan Thomasy (Redding, Calif.) chipped in a hit and a RBI for East Bay.

Ransome Alexander (Fullerton, Calif.) also saw two innings of work on the mound and recorded one strikeout.

The Pioneers will battle the Cougars in one more doubleheader on Sunday to conclude the series.
