Pioneer Baseball Drops Doubleheader Finale to Cougars

SAN MARCOS, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team fell in both ends of their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) season opening doubleheader finale against Cal State San Marcos Sunday afternoon, February 17 at CSUSM Baseball Field.
 
East Bay now moves to 4-5 on the season with a 1-3 mark in league play after their first conference series on the season.
 
In the first game of the afternoon was a back-and-forth action that saw the Pioneers fall in walk-off fashion after forcing extra innings. The contest also saw the first home run of the season as senior Kyosuke Ushimaru (Tokyo, Japan) belted a third inning grand slam down the right field line to give East Bay a 5-1 lead. Ushimaru finished the game with five RBI, two hits and a stolen base. He is 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts on the season.
 
Even after giving up a five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Cal State East Bay kept the pressure coming throughout the ball game with runs in the sixth and seventh and three more runs in the top of the ninth. But a San Marcos single to center field in the 11th ultimately gave the Cougars the 11-10 victory.
 
Junior Ryan McSwain (Redwood City, Calif.) paced the Pioneers with three hits and he also scored two runs. McSwain stole second base after opening the game with a single to left field, it was his second stolen base of the season. Senior Dakota Conners (Manteca, Calif.) finished with a team-best three runs scored as he was walked twice and hit by a pitch to get on base.
 
Omar Sanchez (Winton, Calif.) double to left field in the top of ninth gave him three RBI on the afternoon and knotted the game at 10-10 for the Pioneers. Adam Hollar (Livermore, Calif.) and Steve Robinson (Yuba City, Calif.) both scored two runs each for CSUEB. Hollar added a hit and a RBI and Robinson was touch at the plate forcing three walks.
 
Jacob Eder (Prescott, Ariz.) and Ryan Thomasy (Redding, Calif.) bot garnered hits as Thomasy also stole a base. Joey Dice (Reno, Nev.) registered an RBI.
 
Blake Corsentino (Venture, Calif.) got the start on the mound and tossed 4.1 innings with three strikeouts. Kyle Basch (San Carlos, Calif.) had a solid outing on throughout the the middle innings retiring two Cougars while not allowing and runs. TJ Myers (Pleasanton, Calif.) struck out batter through 1.1 innings of action. Mark Woinarowicz (L, 0-1) (Yorba Linda, Calif.) was issued the loss after giving up the walk-off single in the 11th. He had one strikeout through two innings.
 
In the series finale the Pioneers fell behind early, trailing the Cougars by three runs at the start of the fourth inning. Cal State San Marcos would rip off six more runs in the bottom of the fifth and after East Bay scored three runs in the top of the six, CSUSM bounced back with four runs to end the innings. CSUEB would add one more run but San Marcos took the game 13-4 and the series 3-1.
 
Ryan McSwain and Dakota Conners back led the Pioneers with two hits each. McSwain gained another base after being hit by a pitch and Conners scored a run and picked up his fourth double of the season in the top of the sixth inning.
 
Omar Sanchez compiled two RBI to lead the Pioneers with a single to third base in the sixth inning to open the scoring for the Cal State East Bay. Matt Cantelme (Fair Oaks, Calif.) also notched an RBI with a sixth inning single through the right side.
 
Steve Robinson and Robert Lujan (Reno, Nev.) both finished with a hit and a run scored. Ryan Thomasy, Kyosuke Ushimaru and Paul Bryniarski (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) all recorded one hit each.
 
Jacob Nelson (L, 0-1) (Jefferson, Wisc.) was first on the mound for Cal State East Bay and tied the team high with two strikeouts through three innings of action. Michael Espino (South San Francisco, Calif.) also collected two strikeouts through 1.2 innings of work. Connor Fleharty (Redding, Calif.) and Jordan Milligan (San Jose, Calif.) both tallied a strikeout each.
 
The Pioneers will complete their series against Menlo College with a make-up game on Tuesday, February 19 at Cartan Field in Atherton before returning to CCAA action with a home series against Cal State San Bernardino.
