LA MIRADA, Calif. -- The #23 ranked Cal State East Bay swim team had a tremendous day at Splash! Regional Aquatic Center, capturing two event titles at Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PCSC) Championships to take over first place in the team standings.Â
The Pioneers have a total of 448 points at the midway point of the four-day meet, but still have a tight battle ahead of them. They'll head into Friday's session just 23 points ahead of second-place Fresno Pacific, 28 points ahead of Pepperdine, and 30 points ahead of Azusa Pacific.
"It was pretty incredible job put forth by these women today, battling through the pouring rain" said head coach
Shane Pelton. "To be leading after Day 2 of the meet is completely unexpected, and the biggest takeaway was how well this team has come together. They are racing incredibly hard, but more importantly, racing for each other. When you race for your teammates, that's when special things happen. Our best days are ahead of us and I look forward to watching these ladies continue to compete. "
Thursday's program started with the 500 Freestyle, during which CSUEB showed off its impressive depth by qualifying three swimmers into the "A" Final and boasting five of the top 13 overall finishers.
Peyton Wayment led the way with a fifth place finish and a time of 5:01.12.
Serene Augustain was right behind her in sixth place, and
Abigail Mitchell scored eighth place points. Freshman
Isabel Rishwain turned in an impressive effort to win the "B" Final, posting a time of 5:05.95, while
Maddie Hulse took 13th.
That was followed by the 200 Individual Medley, and the Pioneers were once again well-represented in the "A" Final with a pair of qualifiers.
Ryleigh Weight led the way with a fifth place finish and a time of 2:08.56. Fellow senior
Laurel Carpenter took eighth, and
Miranda McDonnell scored 17th place points.Â
East Bay's first individual victory of the meet came in the 50 Freestyle. Junior
Allie Klinger out-sprinted the field to become PCSC Champion with a time of 23.35 that was just two-tenths of a second off the school record.
Lauren Ostrander also won the "B" Final in that event to secure ninth place points.
The last race of the day resulted in an extremely tight finish, and the Pioneers were victorious yet again. The foursome of
Vivy Hua, Klinger, Ostrander, and
Tatum Roepke captured the conference title by just 0.05 seconds over Pepperdine, posting a time of 1:35.48. Klinger and Ostrander turned in splits of 23.4 and 23.7, respectively, to pace the Pioneers to the first-place podium.
"Allie was a warrior today," added Pelton. "I honestly didn't care about her time, I just wanted to see her compete and get her hand on that wall first. I usually don't take that approach unless I really believe that needs to be the mentality. She had that mentality today and led the team two big victories."
There are still 13 swim events and one diving event to be contested over the final two days in La Mirada. Friday's session includes the 3-Meter Diving finals, followed by the 100 Butterfly, 400 Individual Medley, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke, and 400 Medley Relay.
