Pioneers Close Pepperdine Winter Invite With First Place Finish

EAST LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay swim team picked up four more event victories and ultimately cruised to a first place finish on the final day of the Pepperdine Winter Invite. 

The Pioneers totaled 1161 points at the three-day midseason meet, easily out-pacing conference rivals Alaska Fairbanks (768), Azusa Pacific (643), and UC Santa Cruz (399). 

The first event of the evening finals session, the 1650 Free, which was also the longest event of the weekend, saw six Pioneers finish in the top 10. Leah Robinson and Peyton Wayment notched back-to-back finishes at second and third place. Robinson clocked a time of 17:30.34 and Wayment finished in 17:36.14. Landry Walker followed with a fifth place finish, followed by Maddie Wittkowske in seventh, Morgan Frank in eighth and Madison Chase in ninth.
 
Alondra Ortiz grabbed the spotlight in the next event, logging the Pioneers' first victory of the afternoon in the 200 Back prelims after touching the wall first in 2:05.81. Paige Branson compiled a third place finish at a time of 2:09.53.
 
All-American Allie Klinger turned in a commanding victory in the 100 Free as swam to the top spot in a time of 51.52. Serene Augustain was next up for the Pioneers in fourth place, followed closely by Isabel Rishwain in fifth. Abigail Mitchell also earned points with an eighth place finish.
 
East Bay closed out the weekend on a high note by winning the 200 Fly and the 400 Free. Pioneers were well-represented with four swimmers in the top six of the 200 Fly. Senior Victoria Zukeran swam to a dominant victory in a time of 2:05.13. Sofia Moufarrej settled for third place in 2:10.08, Kelee Shimizu was right behind her in fourth place with Alondra Ortiz placing sixth.
 
The foursome of Allie Klinger, Serene Augustain, Abigail Mitchell and Isabel Rishwain finished in 3:30.41 to lead the way, with CSUEB's "B" team taking third.
 
After an extremely successful midseason meet, the Pioneers will take a break for the holidays before returning to competition on Dec. 7 for a dual meet vs. Nevada at Pioneer Pool.
