HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team will make their final road trip Southern California to visit Cal State Dominguez Hills for a four game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) weekend series.
 
The Pioneers are currently sitting .500 with a 17-17 record with a 14-14 mark in conference play. CSUEB is in the thick of the playoff race as they are sixth in the CCAA standings with the second through eighth spots being separated by three games.
 
WEEK IN REVIEW
Cal State East Bay defeated Cal Poly Pomona 3-1 in their weekend series at Pioneer Field.
 
It was an historic day for senior pitcher Alex Vesia (W, 6-2) (Alpine, Calif.), who tossed an excellent game on the mound for CSUEB. He registered a career-best 10 strikeouts through 6.1 innings without allowing any runs and only walking one batter.
 
The four-year senior also became the all-time leader in career wins and strikeouts in the 55-year history of Pioneer baseball. Vesia won his 21st game to break Sean O'Dowd's 11-year-old record, and recorded his 221st strikeout to surpass the previous mark of 214, held by Nick Burns since 2002.
 
The lone run of the ball game with scored in the opening inning by the Pioneers as Dallas Day (Tustin, Calif.) singled to left field to bring home Dakota Conners (Manteca, Calif.) who singled up the middle for CSUEB's first hit of the afternoon.
 
Dey and Conners along with Adam Hollar (Livermore, Calif.) all recorded multi-hit performances. Dey had two hits including a double, an RBI and a stolen base. Conners logged two hits, scored a run and stole a base. Hollar garnered two hits.
 
Raymond Jones (San Diego, Calif.), Colt Parshall (Oakdale, Calif.), Jacob Eder (Prescott, Ariz.) and Evan Steele (Clovis, Calif.) all chipped in one hit apiece. Parshall also added a stolen base for the Pioneers.
 
Senior Andrew Fernandez (Castro Valley, Calif.) got the start on the mound for East Bay and didn't give up any hits while striking out one Bronco in his only inning of work.
 
Freshman Stas Kuntz (Fremont, Calif.) allowed just one hit in his only inning of action. Fellow freshman Mark Woinarowicz (Yorba Linda, Calif.) walked one batter through 0.2 innings on play.
 
The opening game featured the visiting CPP Broncos pick up their first win of the series with a, 7-0 shutout victory over CSUEB.
 
Despite the outcome the ball game the Pioneers were able to rattle off six hits in the contest. Kyosuke Ushimaru (Tokyo, Japan) led East Bay with two hits on the afternoon. Dallas Dey (Tustin, Calif.), Dakota Conners (Manteca, Calif.), Colt Parshall (Oakdale, Calif) and Jacob Eder (Prescott, Ariz.) all chipped one hit apiece. Dey also added a stolen base.
 
Donavon Ramirez (San Jose, Calif.) got the start on the mound for East Bay and did not allow any hits while fanning one batter in his only inning of action. Ransome Alexander (L, 0-2) (Fullerton, Calif.) gave up one hit and one walk for CSUEB. Joe Blair (Modesto, Calif.) did not allow any hits nor runs in his time on the mound. RJ Hanson led the Poineers with three strikeouts and no walks through six innings of work.
 
In the doubleheader finale, both teams were scoreless until the third innings with CPP scored the first run of the game. Cal State East Bay would respond with runs in the bottom of the third, fourth and fifth innings to secure the, 3-1 victory.
 
Dallas Dey finished the game with yet another hit and a stolen base. Kyosuke Ushimaru doubled and scored a run for East Bay. Colt Parshall added a hit and a run scored.
 
Adam Hollar (Livermore, Calif.) logged in a hit and drove in an RBI. Matt Cantelme (Fair Oaks, Calif.) tripled and scored a run for the Pioneers. Paul Bryniarski (Fountain Hills, Calif.) and Evan Steele (Clovis, Calif.) each recorded RBI's for CSUEB.
 
Andrew Fernandez (W, 2-4) (Castro Valley, Calif.) struck out two Bronco batters while only allowing two walks and one earned run during his six innings of action. Jordan Milligan (San Jose, Calif.) got the start for CSUEB and allowed no runs in his inning on the mound.
 
CSUEB senior Jacob Call (W, 2-3) (Fremont, Calif.) garnered his second win of the season after leading the Pioneers through six innings of action. Call registered two strikeouts while walking one Bronco and only allowing one run scored.
 
The East Bay offense backed up the Pioneer pitching staff well recorded eight hits on the afternoon. The Pioneers scored the first two runs of the game in the third inning and added another in the bottom of the seventh.
 
Raymond Jones (San Diego, Calif.) and Joey Dice (Reno, Nev.) both paced East Bay with multi-hit performances. Jones knocked in a RBI double and scored a run as well. Dice added two hits, including a triple and a run scored.
 
Adam Hollar (Livermore, Calif.), Colt Parshall (Oakdale, Calif.), Aaron Albaum (San Carlos, Calif.) and Matt Cantelme (Fair Oaks, Calif.) all chipped in one hit apiece for Cal State East Bay.
 
Dakota Conner (Manteca, Calif.) and Jacob Eder (Prescott, Ariz.) both finished with one RBI each for CSUEB.
 
Jacob Nelson (Jefferson, Wisc) got the start on the mound for CSUEB and only allowing one hit in his only inning of work. Freshman Stas Kuntz (Fremont, Calif.) also gave up one hit in his inning on the mound. Mark Woinarowicz (Yorba Linda, Calif.) fanned two batters without giving up any walks or hits through his inning of action.
 
PIONEER POINTS
Senior Raymond Jones (San Diego, Calif.) is third on the Pioneers with a .313 batting average with 30 hits, 16 RBI, 37 total bases, 17 runs scored. He also has .385 slugging percentage and .396 on-base percentage.
 
Junior Paul Bryniarski (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) has started 27 games and is third on the Pioneers with 31 hits. Bryniarski is batting .272 with 20 runs scored, 16 RBI and 40 total bases. He also has a .351 slugging percentage with four doubles, a triple and one homerun.
 
Senior Dallas Dey (Tustin, Calif.) (.362 avg, .403 obp, .509 slg) and leads the Pioneers with four home runs and is tops on the team with 42 hits.
 
Returners Adam Hollar (Livermore, Calif.) (.339 avg, .462 obp) and Dakota Conners (Manteca, Calif.) (.345 avg, .405 slg, 13 RBI) have been excellent, while newcomers Jacob Eder (Prescott, Ariz.) (.207 avg, .336 obp, 18 R, 19 RBI) and Kyosuke Ushimaru (Tokyo, Japan) (.303 avg, .408 slg) have provided some pop in the Pioneer lineup.
 
The pitching staff has a collective ERA of 5.29 through 34 games, despite solid strikeout numbers (223 punchouts and 128 walks in 282.1 innings).
 
Senior southpaw Alex Vesia is 5-2 with 54 strikeouts and a 2.09 ERA. Vesia earned CCAA Pitcher of the Week as well as CSUEB Male Athlete of Week after he cemented his place in the Pioneer record books on the strength of yet another brilliant outing to notch a 1-0 shutout victory over Cal Poly Pomona. The four-year senior entered the series opener in the third inning with a 1-0 lead and the bases full of Broncos. After escaping that jam, he proceeded to finish off the game with six scoreless frames.
 
The southpaw struck out a career-high 10 batters and issued just one walk, scattering six hits. He has not allowed an earned run over his last 26 innings and currently ranks second in the CCAA among qualified pitchers with a 2.09 ERA.
 
Vesia's victory over Pomona was his fifth of the season, improving his record to 5-2 with wins in his last three outings. He now has 21 career victories, eclipsing the previous school record held by Sean O'Dowd (2005-07). Vesia's first double-digit strikeout performance of the season brought his career total to 221 punchouts, surpassing the mark set by Nick Burns back in 2002.
 
 RJ Hanson is third on the team with a 3.54 ERA and is second on the team with 40 strikeouts with four wins. Jacob Call is third on the Pioneers on the squad with 34 strikeouts and has only given up three homers this season.
 
 
SCOUTING CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS
The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros are currently 10-24 on the season with a 7-21 mark in CCAA play after falling, 3-1 in their series against No.19 Monterey Bay. Dalton Duarte leads Dominguez Hills with eight home runs and .594 slugging percentage. Duarte also has 27 hits, 17 runs scored and 18 RBI. Rigo Fernandez leads the Toro pitching staff with 64 strikeouts and 43.1 innings tossed. Fernandez has a 2-1 record with a 3.74 ERA.
