GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Saturday was an historic day for the Cal State East Bay swim program as the Pioneers closed out 2018 NCAA Division II Swim Championships by finishing 13th in the team standings with a total of 110 points, both of which are the highest in program history.
Senior
Claire Beaty highlighted the final session of the four-day meet at Greensboro Aquatic Center, finishing second in the nation in the 200 Breast -- the highest individual finish ever by a Pioneer swimmer at NCAA Championships.
With all four of their relays completed during the first three days, East Bay entered competitors in just two events on Saturday to close out the week.
Allie Klinger started the day racing in the morning prelims of the 100 Free. She had an excellent performance, improving her seed time by more than a half-second to finish in 32nd place with a season-best mark of 51.33.
After a frustrating Friday during which she was under the weather throughout the day and was out-touched in a swim-off for a spot in the championship final of the 100 Breast, Beaty bounced back Saturday in a big way. She qualified third during the prelim program, setting up the evening's 200 Breast final as the last race of the meet for the Pioneers.Â
Beaty shined in her final collegiate event, touching the wall in 2:12.93 to take second place. She had an outstanding final 25 yards, closing strong to overtake Carson-Newman's Maggie Melhorn by less than 0.2 seconds.Â
For Beaty, it's her second straight year earning First Team All-America honors in the 200 Breast. She also captured two First Team All-America awards, along withÂ
Morgan McClure, Klinger, and
Vivy Hua, for the 200 and 400 Medley Relays.
McClure, Klinger, Hua,
Shelby Parker, and
Serene Augustain will all return home with All-America honorable mentions for their performances in the 200 and 800 Free Relays. McClure scored in all seven events in which she entered, capturing First Team honors in the 200 IM and 200 Free and picking up an honorable mentions for the 100 Back.
This the second straight season CSUEB has entered the national championship meet ranked outside the top-20 in the coaches poll before going on to finish in the top-15. All told, the Pioneers broke five program records during their trip to Greensboro.Â
