LA MIRADA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay swim team wrapped up the opening weekend of the 2018-19 season on Saturday by taking third place collectively at the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Pentathlon at Splash! Regional Aquatic Center.
Division I California Baptist, which is not a member of the PCSC, ran away with the team title. The Pioneers bested conference foes Concordia Irvine, Dixie State, and Biola, and they were just edged out by Azusa Pacific for second place, despite not accruing any diving points.
The swimming part of the meet was broken down into 13 individual women's events, which were then scored as three pentathlons. CBU boasted the first place finisher in nearly every race, while returning All-Americans
Allie Klinger and
Vivy Hua led the way for the Pioneers.
The 50 Butterfly was East Bay's best event of the day with four of the top eight finishers. Klinger posted a runner-up finish, followed by Hua in fourth. The pair finished fourth and third, respectively, in the 50 Backstroke, then went onto place third and sixth in the 100 Individual Medley, and fourth and sixth in the 50 Freestyle.
Among other noteworthy results was a third place finish for freshman
Alondra Ortiz in the 100 Backstroke.
The first pentathlon consisted on the 50 Fly, 50 Back, 50 Breast, 100 IM, and 50 Free. Klinger was the top finisher for CSUEB, placing third with an aggregate time of 2:53.21. Hua was close behind in fifth (2:55.71), followed by sophomore
Tatum Roepke in 10th (3:02.53). Newcomer
Lauren Ostrander placed 20th (3:08.80) in that set of events, just ahead of freshman teammate
Ciera Nasso (3:09.16).
The next pentathlon doubled the distances, combining times in the 100 Fly, 100 Back, 100 Breast, 100 Free, and 200 IM. Once again the Pioneers were well-represented near the top of the leaderboard. Junior
Victoria Zukeran led the way with a fifth place finish and an overall time of 6:27.95, just ahead of sophomore
Serene Augustain in seventh (6:29.05).
Miranda McDonnell (6:37.21)Â and fellow senior
Laurel Carpenter (6:37.49) placed 14th and 15th, followed closely by senior
Ryleigh Weight in 18th (6:39.42). Ortiz finished 25th in that set of events in 6:44.01.
The final pentathlon of the day was all freestyle, made up of the 50 Free, 200 Free, 500 Free, 100 Free, and 25 Free. Senior
Maddie Hulse was the top Pioneer in the aggregate standings, finishing 10th with a time of 8:55.09. She was followed by a trio of Pioneers bunched closely together in freshman
Paige Branson (19th place), senior
