SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's cross country team took on a talented field of Division I squads on Saturday at the Hornet Invitational, hosted by Sacramento State University.
The Pioneer runners turned in strong performances in both the sprint and distance events. Sophomore
Aaron Jones led the way with a pair of top-10 finishes. He finished eighth overall in the 400 meters with a personal best time of 49.70 that currently ranks seventh among CCAA runners.
Jones also ranks second in the conference in the 200 meters. He didn't quite match that time on Saturday, but nonetheless took ninth place in 22.16.
Alberto Venegas notched a personal best time to pace East Bay in the 1500 meters. He turned in the 13th-fastest time in the CCAA this season with a mark of 3:58.02 to place 23rd overall in the event.
Chris Lessard, who ranks seventh in the 1500, finished in 4:01.20 to place 35th overall.
Pedro Cruz was just behind in in 39th place with a time of 4:01.96 that ranks 22nd among CCAA runners this Spring.
Israel Sotelo also competed in the event, taking 55th place in 4:06.47.
Jeremy Shaw represented the Pioneers in the 800 meters and ran a personal best time of 2:00.90. He placed 38th overall at Sac State and ranks just outside the top 25 in the CCAA.
The rest of the CSUEB men ran the 5000 meters, with
Christian Moncada leading the way in 15:55.51. The freshman placed 26th overall.
Jesus Leon finished in 16:11.00 to take 33rd place, followed by
Luke Laehy in 37th in 16:21.16.
Noah Siegel rounded out East Bay's showing in the 5k with a 42nd place overall finish in 16:38.98.
The Pioneers will take next weekend off before competing in the SF State Distance Carnival on Mar. 31-Apr. 1.
