SAN FRANCISCO -- The Cal State East Bay women's track and field team opened the 2017 season on Saturday at the annual Johnny Mathis Invitational, hosted by San Francisco State at Cox Stadium.
The Pioneers got strong efforts from both their sprinters and distance runners in the first meet of the season, taking on a field that included California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponents SF State, Stanislaus State, and Sonoma State. As a team they posted numerous CCAA championship qualifying standards, an impressive start to the spring season.
Jasmine Starks began the season on a high note with second place in the 400 Meters. Her time of 59.45 is a CCAA championship qualifying mark. Fellow sprinter
Imani Blincoe notched a seventh place finish in the 200 Meters (26.32). She was also the only Pioneer to compete in a field event, taking eighth place in the Long Jump (15 feet, 2 in). Brittany Duquette took 20th in the 200M (28.06) and 10th in the 400M (1:02.58).
Freshman
Alondra Castro Ortiz represented the Pioneers in the 800 Meters, placing 26th with a time of 2:39.71.
A trio of East Bay runners competed in the 1500 Meters, and a pair of seniors secured CCAA qualifying times.
Kandace Compton took seventh place in 4:47.74, while
Sarah Perrin was just behind her in 10th place with a time of 4:49.43.
CSUEB had three of the top 13 finishers in the 5000 Meters, led by freshman
Megan Satterfield in 5th place (18:13.50). Junior

Cecilia Carretero in 13th (18:43.84).
The 2017 season is still young, but the Pioneers will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Stanislaus State for the annual Kim Duyst Invitational.
