HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay baseball team split their home California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) twin bill matchup against Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, February 25 at Pioneer Field.
The Otters picked up a 7-2 win in the opening game and the Pioneers returned the favor with a 5-3 victory to close out the afternoon. With the win, East Bay improved to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play while Monterey Bay fell to a 8-5 mark overall and 1-2 in CCAA action.
The Pioneers started the day off slowly offensively in the opening game as they did not register a hit nor run until the seventh inning. The bright spot of the opening game was starting pitcher
Jacob Call's (2-1) team high three strikeouts. East Bay recorded six hits, two runs and no errors.
Junior infielder
Dallas Dey led CSUEB with three hits and two runs scored on the afternoon. Senior
Wyatt Foreman also added three hits for the Pioneers and a RBI.
Senior
Troy Resch came through big time for the Pioneers with two hits, two RBIs and he scored two runs. Senior
Michael Thomas also stepped up two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs for East Bay.
Senior
Kris Bartlett tallied two runs on one hit with an RBI. Senior
Zack Perugi also compiled a hit and a RBI for CSUEB. Junior
Evan Steele and sophomore
Matt Cantelme each added one hit apiece for the Pioneers.
In the 5-3 victory East Bay played with a different spark than the opening game. The Pioneers finished with at least one hit in every inning of the game.
Sophomore
Joel Lamont (2-0) picked up the win in game two after tossing 5.1 innings and retiring four Otter batters. Freshman
Joey Portugal picked up his team best third save of the season coming in to throw 1.2 innings with one strikeout.
CSUEB will conclude their CCAA opening weekend with a single game against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday, February 26 at CSUMB Baseball Complex. The game will begin at 12 noon.
