SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team fell on the road to Cal State Monterey Bay by a final score of 10-0 on Sunday in the finale of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series.
The Pioneers (11-5) and Otters (9-5), last year's North Division co-champs, both open CCAA play with 2-2 records after splitting the series.
The East Bay offense struggled to get a rally going all afternoon, as four CSUMB pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout.
Dallas Dey was the only Pioneer batter to reach base twice, finishing 1-for-2 with a walk and two stolen bases.Â
CSUEB starter
Nick Risucci held the potent Otter lineup off the scoreboard through the first three frames. In the fourth, he gave up a leadoff double to Hayden Duer, who finished 3-for-5 in the game. After an error put two runners on, head coach
Mike Cummins turned to
Nick Sergi out of the bullpen.Â
Sergi eventually escaped the inning, but he gave up two hits that allowed three runs to come home for Monterey Bay. Two innings later, the Otters put the game away with a six-run explosion that started with two out and the bases empty. Myles Hager highlighted the rally with a solo home run, the first of seven straight hits by the home team in the inning.
All told, the Otters tallied 15 hits and took advantage of six walks by Pioneer pitching. Senior
Alex Leach issued two free passes, but he was the only East Bay hurler who didn't have a run charged to him after tossing a scoreless ninth inning.Â
Next up, CSUEB takes on another one of the top teams in the CCAA when they host No. 24 ranked UC San Diego for a three-game series starting Saturday, Mar. 4.
