LOS ANGELES
-- The Cal State East Bay men's track and field team finished in seventh place this week at the 2016 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships. The Pioneers tallied 20 points, matching their total from last year's championship meet.

Marquise Cherry led the way with a runner-up finish on Friday in the Long Jump. The 2015 conference champion in the event, Cherry was second to UC San Diego's Matt Bowen, scoring eight points with a leap of 6.99m (22 feet, 11.25 inches). He will now prepare for the NCAA Championships in three weeks, where he earned All-American honors last year with a seventh place finish.

The 4x100 relay team picked up four points with a fifth place finish, topping Humboldt State and Stanislaus State. The foursome of Phillip Gernert, Aron Jones, Cherry, and Kimane Juneau lapped the track in 42.45 seconds.

East Bay also got two points from a seventh place finish in the 4x400 relay, as Jones, Leo Theus III, Juneau, and Alberto Venegas turned in a time of 3:27.21.

Jones also just missed qualifying for the finals in the 200 meters, placing 10th in the prelim with a time of 22.35. Juneau notched a 17th place finish, crossing the tape in 23.46.

The Pioneers had a trio of distance runners in the 1500 meters, with Venegas leading the way with a 14th place finish and a prelim time of 4:08.21. Fellow freshman Israel Sotelo was right behind him in 15th place in 4:10.92. Senior Orlando Ramirez took 17th in his final championship meet, crossing the finish line in 4:20.48.
