Pioneer Women Gear up for Conference Championships at Warrior Invite

TURLOCK, Calif.
-- The Cal State East Bay women's track and field team competed against conference rivals Stanislaus State and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday at the Warrior Invitational in the final tuneup before next week's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championships.

In dual meet scoring, the Pioneers defeated Cal State Monterey Bay, 54-13, and fell to Stanislaus, 70-33. 

A pair of CSUEB runners posted first place finishes to lead the way. Senior Suzanne Bateson won the 400 meters by half a second, crossing the tape in 1:00.04. Taryn Stevenson notched a victory in the 3000 meters, with a time of 12:08.73, finishing three-tenths ahead of second-place teammate Ravyn Miller (12:09.02). 

Senior Oddessy Tapia took second place in the 1500 meters with a solid time of 4:57.31 Fellow senior Vanessa Mares also competed in the event, finishing in 5:31.80.

In the 800 meters, junior Sarah Perrin placed sixth to lead the Pioneers in 2:25.72. Kelsey Lamb turned in a time of 2:34.61 to take 15th place.

The squad entered six runners in the sprint events, with freshman Jasmine Starks pacing the Pioneers in both the 100 and 200 meters. She finished fifth in the 100 in 12:48 and sixth in the 200 with a time of 25.73. 

In the 100, Sydney Johnson was just behind Starks, taking sixth in 12.49. Donnisha Brown (13.00) placed ninth, and Deja Croft (13.06) finished 10th.

Imani Blincoe was the team's second finisher in the 200, taking eighth place with a time of 26.12. Miller (26.54), Johnson (26.76), Croft (27.47), and Brown (28.63) placed 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th.

East Bay also turned in a solid time in the 4x100 relay, with the foursome of Johnson, Starks, Miller, and Blincoe finishing second to Stanislaus in 49.67.

Sophomore jumper Yete Zeleke doubled for the Pioneers. She notched a distance of 9.48m (31 feet, 2 inches) in the Triple Jump and leaped 4.21m (13 feet, 10 inches) in the Long Jump.

"This meet was a good tuneup for CCAAs," said head coach Tony Nicolosi. "Our goal is to go to Cal State L.A. next weekend and score the most points we've ever scored since joining the conference."

The 2016 CCAA Championships run next Thursday through Saturday, May 5-7, at CSULA's Jesse Owens Track.
