TURLOCK, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's track and field team competed against conference rivals Stanislaus State and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday at the Warrior Invitational in the final tuneup before next week's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championships.
A trio of newcomers paced the Pioneers in the sprint events with freshman
Aaron Jones leading the way with a pair of strong performances. He took second place in the 100 meters in 10.73 seconds, which stands as the ninth-fastest time in program history. Jones also finished third in the 200 meters with a time of 22.11.
Junior teammate
Kimane Juneau was right behind him in both races, placing fourth in the 100 with a time of 10.90 and fourth in the 200 in 22.69. Freshman Phillip Gernert took seventh in the 100 in 11.51 and sixth in the 200 with a time of 24.12.
Marquise Cherry competed unopposed in the Long Jump, as he gears up to defend his CCAA title in the event. The senior leaped 6.78 meters (22 feet, 3 inches) and will head into the championships as the No. 2 ranked jumper in the conference.
Senior Leo Theus represented the Pioneers in the 400 meters, finishing fifth with a time of 52.68
For the second straight week, sophomore
Latee Piggee had an excellent showing in the 1500 meters. He placed third, crossing the finish line in 4:17.99. Junior teammates
Noah Siegel (4:40.13) and
Charlie Gonzalez (4:50.77) also ran the 1500, placing 12th and 13th, respectively.
"This meet was a good tuneup for CCAAs," said head coach
Tony Nicolosi. "Our goal is to go to Cal State L.A. next weekend and score the most points we've ever scored since joining the conference."
The 2016 CCAA Championships run next Thursday through Saturday, May 5-7, at CSULA's Jesse Owens Track.
