HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's track and field team hosted the third annual East Bay Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Chabot College.
On a hot, sunny day on the East Bay, the Pioneers impressed in both the sprint and distance events as continue to gear up for the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championships in Los Angeles the first weekend in May.
Leo Theus II shined for CSUEB Saturday afternoon as the only Pioneer runner to notch a first place finish. Theus was victories in the 800 meters, holding off Samir Habash of Saint Mary's College with a winning time of 1:57.26.
Freshman
Alberto Venegas also ran a strong 800, taking sixth place in 1:59.56.
Orlando Ramirez finished second in his heat, completing two laps in 2:03.60.
Aaron Jones continued his excellent freshman campaign with a runner-up performance in the 200 meters, finishing in 22.06. He also ran the 100 meters dash for the Pioneers, qualifying for the finals in a deep, talented field with a time of 10.91. Jones tripled in the 400 meters and scored points for East Bay with a seventh place finish in 50.03
Fellow rookie
Philip Gernert also ran both sprint races. He took second in his heat with a 100 meter time of 11.51, then followed that up with a third place finish in his heat in the 200 with a time of 24.12.
The Pioneers put five distance runners in the 1500 meters and two in the 5000.
Latee Piggee had a season-best performance in the 1500, impressively placing second in his heat and ninth overall with a time of 4:13.28 to lead CSUEB.
Kyle Fetter took 10th place in 4:13.81, followed by
Zach Kanlong in 19th (4:17.81),
Cameron Olson in 20th (4:18.47), and
Irvin Parada in 26th (4:23.38).
Esteban Leon led the way in the 5k, notching a fifth place finish in 16:34.66. Teammate
Charlie Gonzalez placed eighth with a time of 17:16.00.
On Friday,
Noah Siegel represented the Pioneers in the 3000 meter steeplechase, finishing in fourth place with a time of 10:54.02.
