SACRAMENTO, Calif.-- Senior
Marquise Cherry highlighted a fantastic day for Cal State East Bay at the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational Saturday by winning the long jump with a leap of 7.46 meters.
Cherry, the defending CCAA champion in the long jump, won the event for the first time this season after finishing in second at SF State's Johnny Mathis Invitational and Stanislaus State's Kim Duyst Invitational.
Freshman
Aaron Jones also impressed in the 200 meter dash, finishing 14
th in a field of 60 with a time of 22.28. Jones also placed in the top 20 in the 100 meter dash, taking 17
th and crossing the finish line with a time of 10.91.
Freshman
Philip Gernert also ran in the 100 and 200 and finished with times of 11.58 and 24.13, respectively.
Four Pioneer runners competed in the 5000 meters. Freshman
Israel Sotelo finished 24
th with a time of 15:58.50. Junior
Kyle Fetter ran a 16:12.56, freshman
Jesus Leon got timed at 16:43.02, and junior
Charlie Gonzalez clocked a 17:46.99.
Cal State East Bay's "A" team in the 4x100 meter relay team of Jones, Cherry, Gernert, and freshman
Kimane Juneau finished in ninth place with a time of 43.37.
A quartet of Pioneers competed in the 1500 meter run. Senior
Orlando Ramirez finished first amongst East Bay runners with a time of 4:16.91. Freshman
Cameron Olson (4:17.67), sophomore
Zach Kanlong (4:19.77), and junior
Irvin Parada (4:22.17) rounded-out the Pioneer results in the 1500.
Freshman
Anthony Anderson took on the competition in the 400 meter dash and ran a 52.19. Freshman
Alberto Venegas and senior Leo Theus represented East Bay in the 800 meter run and ran times of 1:59.36 and 2:00.49, respectively. Junior
Noah Siegel ran the 3000 meter steeplechase and finished at 11:07.53.
"We had a great day. Almost everyone ran a season best or lifetime best," said Cal State East Bay Head Coach
Tony Nicolosi. "We had seven people win their heats, at a fairly top-notch meet. This is probably the first time we've had two men run under 16:15 for 5k since the 80's. Marquise jumped a great provisional mark and we had four more people qualify for conference. It was a huge day."
East Bay will next compete Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2 at the Stanford Invitational and SF State Distance Carnival.
