COMPLETE RESULTS
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's track and field team opened the 2016 season with a strong showing at the Johnny Mathis Invitational, hosted by San Francisco State at Cox Stadium.
"We had a great first day," said head coach
Tony Nicolosi. "There were several personal bests. Marquise got a good mark in the long jump to get the season going in the right direction. Israel debuted in the 1500 against a bunch of post-collegiate pros and showed us he has a very, very bright future."
Defending CCAA long jump champion
Marquise Cherry opened his senior senior with a second place finish in the event on Saturday. He jumped 23 feet, 6 inches (7.16m), just four inches behind Craig Mattox of Academy of Art.
Cherry also led off an impressive 4x100 relay performance for the Pioneers. He,
Aaron Jones, Daniel Gernert, andÂ
Kimane Juneau combined to take first place with a time of 42.02.
Jones had a solid Pioneer debut, also notching a second place finish in the 100 meters. He crossed the finish line in 11.04 seconds, out-pacing Juneau (11.25) in sixth and Gernert (11.51) in 11th.
East Bay's distance runners opened the spring running in both the 1500 and 5000 meters. Freshman
Israel Sotelo had a strong showing in the 1500, taking 16th in a talented field with a time of 4:04.06.
Close behind, a quartet of Pioneers all finished together in a group,
Leo Theus III (4:19.86) placed 26th,
Zach Kanlong (4:20.02) took 27th,
Cameron Olson (4:21.11) finished 30th, and
Irvin Parada (4:21.19) was close behind in 31st.
Kyle Fetter led the way for CSUEB in the 5k, finishing in 33rd place overall with a time of 16:21.08. Once again, he was followed by a group of East Bay runners.
Charlie Gonzalez took 36th place in 16:35.10, succeeded by
Jesus Leon (16:39.10) in 37th and
Noah Siegel (16:41.21) in 38th.
Orlando Ramirez (16:46.45) placed 40th, and
Esteban Leon rounded out the event in 42nd with a time of 17:05.44.
The Pioneers will be back in action next Saturday, Mar. 5, when they travel to Turlock for the annual Kim Duyst Invitational, hosted by Stanislaus State.
