ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Cal State East Bay junior
Marquise Cherry finished in ninth place at the 2015 NCAA Division II Men's Long Jump Championship on Thursday, earning Second Team All-America honors.
Cherry jumped 24 feet, 4.5 inches in his first attempt at the national meet, which was hosted by Grand Valley State. His mark ended up falling 23 inches short of the national champion and was more than five inches shy of Cherry's personal best, but he sustained a minor injury on the fourth turn and was unable to attempt his final jump.
The Diamond Bar native is the first CSUEB male track and field athlete to capture All-America honors since the program re-joined Division II in 2009-10. Earlier this month, he became the first male athlete in school history to win a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship with a long jump that ranks No. 6 in the Pioneer record books.
"Marquise competed well and represented Pioneer track and field valiently," said head coach
Ralph Jones. "It was a great field of jumpers, and he was in the mix until his injury. Although ninth place in the country was short of his goal, he still had the best season by a Pioneer male track athlete in over 20 years. It was a good coming-out party for him, and I expect he will be back next year as one of the favorite in multiple events."
