SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State East Bay junior
Marquise Cherry followed up Friday's California Collegiate Athletic Association championship in the long jump with a runner-up finish on Saturday in the triple jump.
Cherry was involved in all 20 of the Pioneer track and field team's points to round out an impressive weekend at the 2015 CCAA Championships, hosted by SF State.
He leaped 47 feet, 7.25 inches (14.51 meters) in the fourth round of the triple jump finals to take second place behind UC San Diego's Matt Bowen (49 feet, 3 inches).
The foursome of Cherry,
Leo Theus III,
Khalil Corbin, and
Aaron Cameron ran the 4x100 meter relay in 44.56 seconds to place seventh and earn two points for East Bay.
Unfortunately, Cherry sustained a minor muscle injury and was unable to compete in the finals of the 100 meter dash, for which he had qualified with the third-fastest time on Friday.
Zach Kanlong (4:22.19) and
Latee Piggee (4:31.49) competed in the 1500 meters to close out the meet for the Pioneers, finishing 12th and 13th, respectively.
UC San Diego edged out Chico State 216 to 213 to capture the CCAA men's team championship and end the Wildcats' streak of 11 straight titles.
Cherry's season will continue in three weeks when he competes in the long jump at the NCAA Championships in Allendale, Mich.
