HAYWARD, Calif. -- Several members of the Cal State East Bay women's track and field team turned in strong performances on Saturday at the 2015 CSUEB Legacy Invitational, leading the Pioneers to a fourth place team finish in their home meet, which they hosted at Chabot College.
Suzanne Bateson had the most impressive run of the day as she set a personal best in the 400 meters. She placed third overall in the event and clocked in a 58.46 seconds.
Bateson also ran an outstanding led of the 4x400 relay. She teamed up with
Ravyn Miller,
Samira Foy, and
Corryn Barney to post a third place finish with a time of 4:04.24.
Miller (1:00.49) and Foy (1:00.92) ran well individually in the 400 meter dash as well, and
Cynia Sapp clocked in with a time of 1:06.81
Camille Hansen set yet another personal best in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:42.20, good for a third place finish.
Staying with the distance crew,
Oddessy Tapia captured first place in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 11:56.20.
Celina Vera turned in a strong performance with a fourth-place finish in the 5000 meters, crossing the finish line in 19:17.71
Moving to the sprints,
Sydney Johnson led the way for East Bay in the 100 meter dash, taking ninth place overall in 12.96 seconds.
Kiera Bethley was close behind in 13.15 seconds, and
Donnisha Brown finished with a time of 13.19.
Five Pioneers ran the 200 meter dash, and it was Barney posting the top time of 25.97 to place ninth. Bethley (27.24), Cox (27.30), Foy (27.33), and Brown (27.38) all finished within one-and-a-half seconds of each other.
Iris Martinez ran the 800 meters for the Pioneers in 2:33.41, and the "B" foursome of Cox, Sapp, and Vera, and
Vanessa Mares finished the 4x400 relay in 4:29.51.
"Today was a proud day as we celebrated our program's history and had a good tune-up as we prepare for CCAA championships," said head coach
Ralph Jones. "We had some standout performances on the women's side. I think we're getting healthy and strong at the right time."
As part of the Legacy Invitational, CSUEB Athletics held a brief ceremony to honor eight legendary Pioneers who captured national championships in track and field.
