HAYWARD, Calif. --
Marquise Cherry had a huge day to lead the Pioneer men's track & field team at the 2015 Cal State East Bay Legacy Invitational on Saturday.
The junior was the top collegiate finisher in all three events in which he entered, pacing the Pioneers to a sixth place team finish at their home meet, which they hosted at Chabot College.
Cherry was the individual champion in the long jump, leaping past the rest of the field with a distance of 23 feet, 4 inches (7.11 meters). He also took home first place in the 100 meter dash, setting a personal best in the finals with a timw of 10.72 seconds.
Finally, Cherry was the top finisher among collegiate runners in the 200 meters, and once again his time was a personal best. He clocked in a 21.97 to close out the day.
Aaron Cameron also ran the 100 meters for East Bay, posting a time of 11.57 seconds in the preliminary heats.
Leo Theus III ran the 200 along with Cherry and turned in a time of 23.39 seconds.
Theus was even more impressive in the 400 meters, crossing the finish line with his best time of the season in 50.31 seconds. He placed seventh overall in the race and third among college runners.
A trio of Pioneer men ran the 800 meters, with
Kyle Fetter leading the way in 2:04.01.
Orlando Ramirez clocked in a 2:09.37, and
Latee Piggee finished in 2:22.83.
Piggee had a strong showing in the 1500 meters, finishing eighth overall and first in his section with a time of 4:10.11, which eclipses his previous personal best by 14 seconds. Fetter also competed in the 400, posting a time of 4:22.58, and
David Caballero ran the four laps in 4:32.12
The 4x400 relay team of Theus, Fetter, Ramirez, and
Zach Kanlong placed fourth with a time of 3:46.76. Kanlong also took on the 5000 meters and clocked in at 17:17.14.
"Today was a proud day as we celebrated our program's history and had a good tune-up as we prepare for CCAA championships," said head coach
Ralph Jones. "We had some standout performances on the men's side. I think we're getting healthy and strong at the right time."
As part of the Legacy Invitational, CSUEB Athletics held a brief ceremony to honor eight legendary Pioneers who captured national championships in track and field. Frannie Castro, Marilyn King, Debi "Cis" Schafer, and Cathy Sulinski were present for the festivities to help the Pioneers celebrate their championship history. Click here to view a
