Box Score SAN FRANCISCO -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team fell on the road to San Francisco State by a score of 5-3 in Sunday's regular season finale, snapping the Pioneers' seven-game winnings streak. East Bay's record is now 30-18 overall and 24-16 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play as they await their postseason fate. CSUEB went 15-3 in its final 18 games.
The Pioneers out-hit the Gators 13 to 10 in the loss, but committed four costly errors on defense. CCAA Player of the Year candidate Kelly Starnes finished 3-for-5 to lead East Bay, finishing the season with a .371 batting average in conference games.
The visitors fell behind early when Dillon Meyer hit a home run off
Michael Pope in the bottom of the second -- SF State's second home run of the entire season -- to give the Gators a 3-0 lead.
The Pioneers got a run back in the third as
Marcus Williams led off with a double and stole third base.
Zac Chuvala then picked up the RBI with a sacrifice fly.
The Gators answered right back in the fourth, however. Fernando Escobar knocked in Matt Vera with a triple to make it 4-1. Escobar helped SF State tack on an insurance run in the seventh, bringing home Meyer with an infield single.
East Bay went into the ninth inning trailing by four, but the Pioneer bats made it interesting. Daniel Carney led off the inning with a solo home run to left, the first of his Pioneer career. The very next batter was pinch-hitter
David Elzig, and the left-hander followed suit, blasting his first career home run over the right field fence. That brought the Pioneers within two runs, but the rally fell short as they stranded Starnes on first base to end the game.
Pope (4-5) suffered the loss after allowing two earned runs on eight hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out eight. Julian Garcia gave up a run on two hits in 1.1 innings of relief.
Bryce Vidmar came in to get the final two outs for East Bay in the eighth inning of the senior's last regular season game.
One of Starnes' hits was his 12th double of the season. He finished the regular season as the team leader in hits (63), runs (38), homers (4), total bases (87), and on-base percentage (.416). Seniors Ellis Stephney and Brandon Alexadner and juniors Carney and Jason Fletcher each finished with two hits in the game.
