Bats Explode for 9-4 Midweek Win over Menlo

3/4/2014 8:44:00 PM

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Pioneer baseball team had a breakout offensive performance on Tuesday afternoon in a 9-4 non-conference win over visiting Menlo College (7-9). Cal State East Bay (9-7) notched season highs for both runs scored and hits (15) as the team improved its home record to 7-3. Today was a makeup game from the rained out contest between the Pioneers and Oaks back on Feb. 8.

On the defensive side of the ball, it was a staff day for East Bay. Head coach Bob Ralson used 10 pitchers in the victory, and none for more than one inning. Michael Pope, Bryce Vidmar, Julian Garcia, John Tierney, Marcus Williams, Chacho Madrigal, Bryan Webster, Brian Allec, Chris Schmalz, and Jason Fletcher combined to allow just one earned run on four hits with five walks and 10 strikeouts.

For both Tierney and Allec, it was their first appearance as Pioneers. Both freshmen right-handers used redshirts last year. Williams saw his first collegiate action on the mound after previously being used exclusively as an infielder.

"It was good to get a lot of guys some work today," said Ralston. "We had several guys throw well, and it was good to see our bats wake up. Carney had a real big game -- drove in some runs and made a Sportscenter catch."

Ralston was referring to a leaping catch made by first baseman Daniel Carney on a foul pop-up right in front of the Menlo dugout. It was a nifty play from a player who otherwise stood out with his bat on this day.

Carney capped off the first Pioneer scoring rally as East Bay put up four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Marcus Wise and Ryan Kochan both hit singles and both stole a bag to lead things off, and Eren Miravalles walked to load the bases. After a base hit by Brandon Alexander then by an error on a grounder by Ellis Stephney made it 2-0 East Bay, Carney lined a two-run double to left to break the inning open.

Menlo answered back with three unearned runs in the fourth against Tierney, but the Pioneer bats went right back to work and got all the runs they would need to cruise to a victory. With one out, Wise walked, Kochan singled, and Miravalles and Alexander laced back-to-back doubles to extend the East Bay lead to 7-3. But the Pioneers weren't done. With two outs, Carney lined a base hit up the middle to plate a run, and Kelly Starnes followed by cranking a double to the wall in left to bring home Carney for the ninth run.

Kochan and Carney both finished 3-for-5 in the game, with the former stealing three bags and the latter leading the team with three RBI.

Alexander went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Wise notched two hits, a steal, and two runs scored.

Starnes also turned in a 2-for-4 afternoon. Miravalles was on base twice with a hit and a walk and scored both times.

The Pioneers return to their CCAA schedule this weekend when they take on Cal State Stanislaus for four games, starting Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Turlock, Calif.
