Box Score 2 HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader to visiting UC San Diego on Sunday. The Pioneers (15-13, 9-11 CCAA) scored two total runs in the two games, while committing eight errors. The Tritons (17-10, 13-7 CCAA) won three out of four games in the series.
Game 1 -- UCSD 12, CSUEB 0
The Tritons earned a shutout victory in the first game behind six strong innings from starting pitcher Blake Fassler. East Bay managed just five hits, led by a 2-for-3 performance by Kelly Starnes in the leadoff spot.
David Elzig, Jason Fletcher, and Chacho Madrigal notched one hit each.
Michael Pope (1-3) took the loss for the Pioneers after allowing five earned runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings. Following a zero in the top of the first, UCSD scored in four straight innings. The visitors grabbed an early lead with three runs in the second and broke the game open with four more in the fourth. The Tritons totaled 17 hits, the most East Bay has allowed in a game this season.
John Tierney tossed three innings for the Pioneers out of the bullpen, allowing two earned runs and recording four strikeouts without a walk. Tierney gave way to Jacob Phillips, who made his CSUEB debut in the top of the eighth. Phillips gave up a pair of runs and notched three strikeouts in two innings.
Game 2 -- UCSD 5, CSUEB 2
Senior
Ben O'Bryan gave the Pioneers in a solid effort in the second game, but a series of defensive miscues proved costly. UCSD scored the game's first run on an RBI double by Nick La Face, and then after an error extended the inning, a base hit by Jack Larsen made it 2-0.
The Pioneers answered right back, scoring their first of the day in the bottom of the first. Miscommunication by the Triton defense led to a dropped fly ball, putting leadoff man Kelly Starnes on second base. After Ryan Kochan advanced Starnes to third, Jason Fletcher brought him home with a ground out.
O'Bryan and UCSD hurler Troy Cruz both hung three straight zeroes on the scoreboard after that, and the score held at 2-1 into the fifth inning. The Tritons picked up another run in the top of the frame without the benefit of a hit. Erik Lewis walked, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch.
David Elzig led off the bottom of the fifth for East Bay with a single to right, and he scored one pitch later when
Chris Porter lined a double that got past the diving centerfielder all the way to the fence. UCSD again had an answer, however, as the visitors scored another run in the sixth following two infield errors.
That would prove to be enough from Cruz, who finished the complete game with just five hits allowed. O'Bryan was relieved after giving up one earned run on four hits in six innings. The senior fell to 2-3 on the season after taking the loss, although he still leads the team with a 2.27 ERA.
Julian Garcia pitched two impressive innings out of the bullpen to keep the game tight. The Half Moon Bay native struck out five of the seven batters he faced and didn't allow at hit. Fletcher tossed the last frame for the Pioneers and gave up an unearned run.
Daniel Carney was the only Pioneer with multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Kochan reached base twice with a single and a walk, and he also stole his seventh bag of the season.
The Pioneers hit the road next weekend for a tough conference series against No. 6 Chico State, which swept San Francisco State in four games this weekend.
