O'Bryan's Gem Gives Pioneers Doubleheader Split with HPU

3/1/2014 11:05:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HAYWARD, Calif. -- Senior pitcher Ben O'Bryan tossed a complete game shutout as the Cal State East Bay baseball team split its doubleheader with visiting Hawaii Pacific on Saturday. The Pioneers (8-7) dropped the first game in 10 innings, 6-1. They also managed only one run against the Sea Warriors (9-3) in the second game, but O'Bryan made it stand up in the 1-0 victory. East Bay won two of out three games in the non-conference series after Friday's contest was rained out.

"O'Bryan was oustanding today, that was huge," said head coach Bob Ralston after the game. "Hawaii Pacific is a good team. We got good pitching today, and Buchanan caught a nice game, but we really need to be more consistent on offense."

The Pioneers will look to improve on their 6-3 home record when they continue non-confererence action against Menlo College this Tuesday in a make-up game. Check back for scheduling updates once a game time is announced.

Game 1 - HPU 6, CSUEB 1 (10 innings)

Senior right-hander Sean Becker took the ball to start the first game and turned in an outstanding performance. He shut the Sea Warriors down over the first six innings, facing just three batters in four of them.

The Pioneers struck first in the bottom of the second inning. After Eren Miravalles led off with a walk, Daniel Carney laced an opposite-field double into the right field corner. A two-out single up the middle by Zac Chuvala made it 1-0.

Hawaii Pacific finally got on the board in the seventh, thanks to a two-out knock of their own. Samuel Goold found the right-center gap to plate Keanu Kapana and tie the game.

The Pioneers couldn't mount any rallies offensively in the late innings, and the teams went into extras still knotted at 1-1. Becker came out after 7.1 innings. He scattered nine hits, struck out three, and didn't issue a walk for the third time in five starts.

Bryce Vidmar finished off the eighth for Becker, and Chris Schmalz pitched a scoreless ninth. However, the Sea Warriors broke the game open with five runs on six hits in the top of the 10th inning. For the game, they out-hit the Pioneers 15 to 5.

Kelly Starnes finished 2-for-4 for East Bay and was the only Pioneer batter to notch multiple hits.

Game 2 - CSUEB 1, HPU 0

The first six innings of the second game were remarkably similar to the first one, although if anything, O'Bryan was even more impressive than Becker. A scheduled seven-inning game, the series finale was a true pitchers' dual as each team managed just three total hits.

Fortunately, the Pioneers got two of their three hits in the first inning and immediately grabbed the lead. Ryan Kochan led off with single up the middle. After Starnes sacrificed him over, Miravalles lined a base hit into right-center to pick up what would turn out to be the game's only RBI.

The Sea Warriors put base runners on in each of the final three innings against O'Bryan, but the right-hander had outstanding stuff and baffled HPU with breaking balls all afternoon. He allowed just three hits and walked three while striking out nine to earn his first victory of the season with a seven-inning complete game.

"I was trying to get ahead of hitters with my fastball, and then finish them off with sliders," said O'Bryan after the game. "The last couple starts, I've tried to relax and really focus on throwing strikes to give my defense a chance."

The Dublin native recorded his 100th career strikeout as a Pioneer during the game. He has now thrown 14 consecutive scoreless innings over his past two starts. For the season, O'Bryan has a team-best 1.67 ERA. He has struck out 25 batters and allowed just nine hits in 22.1 innings.

Kochan finished 2-for-3 in the game and leads the Pioneers with a .407 batting average through the first four weeks of the season.
