Box Score SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team earned an 8-5 road win against Cal State San Bernardino on the first day of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play Friday afternoon. The Pioneers (4-1, 1-0 CCAA) scored eight runs in the third inning, which was enough to hand the Coyotes (0-6, 0-1 CCAA) their sixth straight loss.
Senior
Sean Becker (2-1) picked up the victory in his third start of the season, scattering 12 hits in 7.0 innings without issuing a walk. The right-hander allowed three earned runs and struck out four, leaving with an 8-3 lead.
The Pioneers fell behind early on a solo home run in the bottom of the first by William Ouellette. The East Bay bats came alive two innings later and produced all the runs the team would need against Coyote starter Kerry Kelley.
Starting with a leadoff double by
Chris Porter, the Pioneers strung six hits in a row together to start the third inning. They had already taken a 4-1 lead when the first out was recorded, and by the time CSUSB got out of the inning, East Bay had scored eight runs on eight hits and sent 13 men to the plate. Porter,
Zac Chuvala, and Kelly Starnes all reached base twice in the frame.
The Coyotes' Aaron Beckley touched up Becker for an RBI single in the fourth and an RBI triple in the sixth, but the home team was never able to put together a big inning.
Left-hander
Bryce Vidmar pitched the last 2.0 innings for East Bay, allowing three hits. He retired the Coyotes in order in the eighth, and gave up a pair of solo home runs in the ninth before closing out the Pioneer victory.
The teams combined for 28 hits in this game, 13 of which came from the visiting dugout. Ellis Stephney went 3-for-4 with an RBI, notching his first three-hit game as a Pioneer. Marcus Wise (2-for-4 with a walk) and Starnes (1-for-2 with three walks) were on base seven times at the top of the lineup.
Eren Miravalles went 2-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs.
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15 for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. as the series continues at Cal State San Bernardino. The games will not be available on live stats.
