Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. — The Pioneer baseball team edged out visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills by a score of 9-8 in Sunday's series finale. Cal State East Bay (27-15, 17-15 CCAA) won in thrilling fashion, as
Eren Miravalles laced a single with bases loaded and two outs in the ninth to secure the walk-off victory. With the win, the Pioneers took three out of four games from the Toros (20-21, 16-16 CCAA) in this crucial conference series. They're now 22-5 at home this season.
It was another rare slugfest at Pioneer Field on a hot, cloudless day. CSUDH scored in seven of the nine innings, and the teams combined for 23 hits, 12 walks, and eight errors.
The Toros got on the board in the first inning against Pioneer starter
Nick Hudson as Kevin Logan scored on a wild pitch.
East Bay posted a four-spot in the second, the highest-scoring inning for either team. Singles by
Bryson Nakamura and
David Castillo and a walk to
David Elzig loaded the bases with no outs. After Nakamura scored on a wild pitch,
Zac Chuvala plated a run with a single to center. Another run scored when the pitcher threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt, and then Miravalles capped off the rally with an RBI base hit to right.
The Toros answered back with two runs on three hits in the top of the third against Hudson. Ivory Thomas drove in a run with a single, his first of three hits and three RBI on the day.
Leading 4-3, the Pioneers added on in the bottom of the frame.
Charlie Sharrer singled through the hole and eventually came around to score on a two-out base hit by Elzig.
Thomas knocked in another run for CSUDH in the fourth to make it 5-4 Pioneers. Again, East Bay answered back. Nakamura sliced a double over the left fielder's head, scoring Sharrer all the way from first.
The Toro picked up a run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly, and that was the end of the day for Hudson. The junior right-hander allowed three earned runs in 4.0 innings, recorded five strikeouts, and didn't factor in the decision.
Bryce Vidmar relieved him and gave the Pioneers two innings of relief, surrendering a hit and a run.
That run came in the top of the sixth, as Hayden Maurice lined an RBI single to left to tie the game at 6-6. It didn't stay that way for long, however. The Pioneers answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. After Alexander and Zozaya led off with back-to-back infield singles, Nakamura hit a potential double-play ball that the shortstop couldn't handle. That brought one run home, and then the Pioneers scored again on an RBI ground out by Castillo.
Ben O'Bryan came into pitch to start the seventh and posted the Pioneers' first zero on the scoreboard since the second inning. His luck wasn't as good in the eighth, as the leadoff batter reached on a fielding error. With two outs, Thomas once again did the damage, singling up the middle to make it 8-7 Pioneers.
O'Bryan put two on with one out to start the ninth, and head coach
Bob Ralston turned to senior
Matt Fontaine, who had already picked up a complete game victory on Friday. After a fly out, the Pioneers were one out away from victory. But the next batter hit a top-spin chopper to shortstop that went off Chuvala's glove, allowing the tying run to score. Fontaine then got another fly out to escape further trouble.
In the bottom of the ninth, Nakamura led off with a walk. After Castillo sacrificed him to second with an excellent bunt, Elzig struck out. With two outs, the Toros intentionally walked
Andrew Rodriguez. Ralston then sent
Jordan Wilder in to pinch-hit for Chuvala, and the senior drew his team-leading 21st walk of the season to load the bases. That brought up Miravalles, who fell behind 0-2 before shooting a ground ball through the middle to bring home the winning run.
The Pioneers mobbed Miravalles in celebration, as they remain within two games of a playoff spot with the win. Fontaine (4-1) got the victory in relief, his second of the weekend.
Nakamura finished 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs, and two RBI. Miravalles went 2-for-6 with a pair of runs driven in. Chuvala also notched two hits, going 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. The junior led the Pioneers with a .455 batting average in the series.
Alexander reached base three times with a hit and two walks. Castillo and Elzig each had a hit and an RBI. Zozaya and Sharrer both went 1-for-5, with the latter scoring two runs for East Bay.
Next week, the Pioneers take on SF State. They play home games on Friday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m., with a doubleheader on Saturday in San Francisco. Sunday's game will be the final home game of 2013, and the Pioneers will be celebrating Senior Day.
