Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. — The Pioneer baseball team got hits from nine different batters en route to a 11-6 win over Cal State San Bernardino (9-11, 3-9 CCAA) on Sunday at Pioneer Field. The win gives Cal State East Bay (17-6, 10-6 CCAA) its first four-game sweep against a conference opponent since March of 2010. The Pioneers improve to 15-2 at home this year, as junior
Nick Hudson pitched seven innings to pick up the first victory of his East Bay career.
After Hudson set the Coyotes down in order to start the game, the Pioneers jumped out to a big lead with five runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Bryson Nakamura and
Brandon Alexander both got base hits to lead things off.
Eren Miravalles then laid down an outstanding bunt and beat the play at first base. The pitcher's throw got away, allowing Nakamura to score the game's first run. After Wilder walked to load the bases, four consecutive Pioneer hitters picked up RBIs.
Kyle Zozaya singled in the hole,
Kenny Uyetake walked, and
David Castillo and
Andrew Rodriguez both plated runs with ground outs. After a long first inning, it was 5-0 East Bay.
Hudson was perfect through the first three innings, but ran into some trouble in the fourth when Curtis Cassise's one pop-up fell in no-man's land in shallow right-center. Aaron Beckley followed with a double to right that kicked away from Alexander, allowing Cassise to come home. The next batter made it 5-2 with a sacrifice fly.
East Bay started to pull away in the sixth inning, however, when they posted three more runs and chased Coyote starter Josh Valentine from the game. Nakamura knocked in a run with a line drive into the gap in right-center, and Alexander brought another one home with a sac fly. The Pioneers picked up their third run thanks to one of four San Bernardino errors on the day.
Hudson allowed two more runs in the seventh when the Coyotes put a runner on third with two outs following a double play. The Pioneer right-hander then tried to pick the runner off at third base, but he threw it away, bringing in a run. The next batter was Richard Mount, who jacked a solo shot into the trees beyond left field to make it 8-4 Pioneers.
The Pioneers tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. With
Zac Chuvala on third base and Uyetake on second with no outs, Castillo laid down an excellent squeeze bunt. The first run scored, but when the pitcher threw to first base to get the out, Uyetake never stopped running and came all the way home before the Coyotes could get the ball back to the catcher.
Hudson (1-0) exited after seven innings and 90 pitches with a 10-4 lead. He allowed three earned runs on six hits, walked one, and struck out three. Left-hander
Bryce Vidmar came in and pitched a perfect eighth inning, needing just nine pitches to retire the side.
The Pioneers added a run in the bottom of the eighth, and San Bernardino countered with two runs in the ninth off junior
Taylor Kruger to make it 11-6. Head coach
Bob Ralston went to his bullpen for the final time with one out, calling on junior
Chris Schmalz, who recorded the last two outs to seal the victory.
Nakamura finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, batting out of the leadoff spot for the first time this season. Zozaya was on base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk. The senior scored a pair of runs and knocked in two more. Alexander posted a multi-hit game, as well, finishing 2-for-3. Castillo drove in two runs in the game, and Wilder, Uyetake, and Rodriguez were all on base twice with a hit and a walk each.
The Pioneers have a tough test in front of them next week as they prepare for perhaps their most important home series of the season. Chico State, ranked No. 3 in the nation this week, visits Pioneer Field for a four-game series. The opener is set for 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
