Box Score SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay baseball team lost 5-3 to Cal State Monterey Bay in the finale of their four-game CCAA-opening series on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Otters (8-3, 3-1 CCAA) take three out of four from the Pioneers (8-3, 1-3 CCAA), though they only outscored East Bay 19-17 in the series. Senior catcher
David Castillo was 3-for-4 for the Pioneers, who are still looking for their first road win.
After splitting yesterday's doubleheader, Monterey Bay jumped on the board early in today's game against Pioneer starter
Sean Becker. Tommy George hit a one-out triple to center field off Becker, later scoring on a sacrifice fly.
After the Pioneer left the bases loaded in the top of the second, the Otters added to their lead in the third inning. Mark Hurley drove in a run with an RBI single, then David Garcia reached on a throwing error that allowed another run to come home, making it 3-0 Otters.
The Pioneers answered back in the fourth, as it was their turn to take advantage of defensive miscues.
Jordan Wilder singled to lead off the inning and came around to score two batters later, thanks to two infield errors.
East Bay had a chance to turn the momentum in the game, but they left two more runners on base in the sixth. CSUMB came back in the bottom of the frame and tacked on a pair of runs that would prove to be the game-winners. With Becker still in the game, the Otters loaded the bases with one out on two hits and a walk. Then George came up with another big hit, knocking home two runs with a single through the hole into left.
Trailing 5-1, the Pioneers were able to put one more rally together in the top of the eighth inning. Castillo laced a two-out single up the middle to put runners on first and second. After a wild pitch put both in scoring position, pinch hitter
Bryson Nakamura chopped a grounder to the left side. The shortstop threw the ball away, allowing both East Bay runs to score, making it 5-3 Otters.
Zac Chuvala followed with a single, but
Andrew Rodriguez lined out to end the inning. The Pioneers then went in order in the ninth off CSUMB closer A.J. Quintero.
Becker (1-1) pitched 6.0 innings, suffering his first defeat in his second career start. The junior allowed four earned runs on nine hits and recorded three strikeouts. He was relieved by senior
Zachary Wong, working for the first time in the series. Wong picked up two strikeouts in a scoreless seventh inning.
Nick Hudson tossed the eighth inning for East Bay, also posting a scoreless frame.
Castillo's three hits were the most by any player in the game. Rodriguez went 2-for-5 out of the lead-off spot. Wilder was on base three times for the Pioneers, going 1-for-3 with two walks and a run.
Kyle Zozaya had a walk and a double, the only extra base hit for East Bay in the game.
Naea Kalehuawehe had the only RBI for the Pioneers on a ground out, and the junior first baseman also walked and scored a run.
Next weekend, the Pioneers continue conference play with a tough matchup against Cal State Stanislaus. The games Friday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m.) will be at Pioneer Field, with the Warriors hosting the Saturday doubleheader
