Box Score SEASIDE, Calif. — A seven-run sixth inning doomed the Cal State East Bay baseball team in Friday's 8-5 loss to Cal State Monterey Bay (6-2, 1-0 CCAA). The loss snaps a program-best seven-game winning streak to start the season, and it comes in the Pioneers' CCAA opener, as well as the team's first road game of 2013.
Senior
Ben O'Bryan got the ball for the Pioneers (7-1, 0-1 CCAA) for the third straight series opener. He was outstanding in the early going, holding the Otters scoreless through the first five innings.
East Bay jumped on the board first and took a 2-0 lead off CSUMB starter Chris Daniels in the top of the third.
Zac Chuvala led off the inning with a double to right field and quickly advanced to third on a passed ball. The next batter, lead-off man
Andrew Rodriguez, reached on a throwing error by third baseman Ronnie Fhurong, allowing Chuvala to score the game's first run. After Rodriguez stole second base (his team-leading fourth stolen bag of the year), he advanced to third on
Brandon Alexander's ground out to the right side. With one out,
Eren Miravalles lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 2-0 Pioneers.
O'Bryan finally ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, the Otters rattled off five hits and a walk in six consecutive batters take a 3-2 lead and chase the Pioneer starter from the game. Junior
Nick Hudson relieved O'Bryan with the bases loaded, and Fuhurong greeted him with a base-clearing triple, breaking the game open and giving the Otters a 6-2 lead. After another single plated the seventh run of the inning, Hudson recorded a pair of strikeouts to retire the side.
Cal State Monterey Bay tacked on a run the following inning off
Taylor Kruger, the third Pioneer pitcher of the day, when Mark Hurley led off with a double to left-center. He advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a ground out, making it 8-2 Otters.
The Pioneers made a final rally in the ninth, but it wasn't quite enough. Daniels hit
Jordan Wilder to lead off the inning, which ended his day. The Otter hurler ended up tossing 8.0 innings and allowed just four hits and two earned runs to notch his first win of the season.
Jacob Crose came in the game and walked the first batter he faced, senior
Kyle Zozaya.
Charlie Sharrer then shot a single through the right side to load the bases with nobody out.
David Castillo knocked home a run with sacrifice fly, but Crose got
Roger Luna to ground out to second for the second out. CSUMB coach Walt White then went to his bullpen again, calling on Andrew Wild to get the final out. Wild was true to his name, hitting the first batter he faced — pinch hitter
Naea Kalehuawehe — with a pitch to load the bases.
The Pioneers got back to the top of their lineup, and Rodriguez kept them alive with a two-run single up the middle. This made the score 8-5 and brought the tying run to the plate. A comeback wasn't in the cards, however, as Alexander grounded out to end it.
O'Bryan (1-1) suffered his first defeat of the season. He allowed seven hits in 5.1 innings and was responsible for six of the Otter runs. Left-hander
Bryce Vidmar pitched a perfect eighth inning for East Bay, picking up one strikeout.
Sharrer, playing right field today, was the only Pioneer to record multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Miravalles was 1-for-2, and after eight games, the junior leads the team with a .407 batting average, .485 on-base percentage, and 11 hits.
East Bay is back home in Hayward tomorrow to continue this four-game series with the Otters. The teams are scheduled for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. at Pioneer Field. Expected starters for the first game are sophomore
Michael Pope for the Pioneers and Will Anderson for CSUMB. Probable pitchers for the seven-inning game to follow are senior
Matt Fontaine for East Bay and Jeff Owen for the Otters.
