RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Cal State East Bay returned to action on Saturday at the Lancer Aquatic Center on the campus of Cal Baptist University. The Pioneers competed in a double-dual meet defeating Division III Redlands and falling to host and Division II squad Cal Baptist.
"We certainly had a few misses today, but overall I was very happy with the level of performance. I think we saw where we are weak right now, and what we need to address moving forward," said East Bay Head Coach Ben Loorz. "It was a back-and-forth meet. When we looked at the final results (outside of diving) it was a very close meet (with Cal Baptist)."
East Bay individual event winners included Rachel Shimizu (200 free), Makila Schuck (100 breast), Rachel Knowles (200 breast) and Mariam Lowe (500 free). This group provided some of the Pioneer highlights amid a group of strong performances.
"Seniors Caitlin DeNise and Rachel Knowles were standouts. Caitlin went (58 seconds) in the 100 back to lead off our medley relay. She had great in-season times in the 100 fly and 50 back as well," said Loorz. "(Knowles) continues to go faster every week in her specialty, the 200 breaststroke, and her (sub-2:26) time today was excellent."
The Pioneers closed out their meet with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Alyssa Tenney, Alyssa Littlefield, Noelle Farrar, and Shimizu (1:41.01) touched first by over five-tenths of a second ahead of the host Lancers. It was a bit of revenge for East Bay after getting out touched by a similar margin in the 400-yard medley relay to open Saturday's meet.
"Cal Baptist beat us in the medley relay, but both times currently sit top-five in the NCAA for that event. This is what we strive to do, win or lose. We want to go head-to-head with teams that help us be great," stated Loorz.
One team that could continue that trend is Division I Fresno State. The Pioneers will host the Bulldogs in their next scheduled meet on Saturday, Dec. 7.
