HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East baseball program honored their seniors in their final appearance at Pioneer Field. The seniors came through in big way as Cal State East Bay swept San Francisco State in a CCAA doubleheader 6-5 and 9-2 on May 5.
With one game remaining, the Pioneers are 12-25 in the CCAA and 13-26 overall. San Francisco State drops to 13-26 in CCAA play and 16-32 for the season.
“This was a great day for our seniors and their families,” Pioneer coach
Bob Ralston said. “Our seniors contributed to both victories today.”
With the Gators leading 2-0, Pioneer senior reliever
Xavier De La Cruz came in the top of the fourth inning with the bases loaded and one out, and retired A.J. Almarez and Mark Lindsey to end a Gator scoring threat.
The Gators pushed across two more runs in the fifth inning.
East Bay got on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Jordan Wilder walked to open the inning, stoled second and scored on a double off the bat of
Kenny Uyetake.
Brad Rich drove in Uyetake with a base hit.
Pinch hitter senior
Jake Davis belted a three run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Pioneers a 5-4 lead.
Senior Ed Rettagliata added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run, his third homer of the season.
Miguel Flores led off the top of the ninth with a homer, but senior
Bryce Miller, who entered the game in the eighth inning, retired the next three Gator hitters to pick up his second save of the season and preserve the Pioneer victory.
Reliever
Ryan Devencenzi pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the victory.
In the second game, the Pioneers jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third inning highlighted by an RBI single by senior
Andrew Woolfe.
The Pioneers added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Woolfe drove in his second run of the game with a single, while Davis scored on a wild pitch.
Senior
Tanner Laran had a two-run triple to highlight a Pioneer three-run, sixth inning.
Senior pitcher AJ Gallardo improved to 6-1 for the season as he held the Gators to one earned run on five hits in six innings of work. Woolfe drove in four runs while senior
Brett Hall scored three times for the Pioneers.
East Bay will conclude the 2012 season on May 6 with a road game at San Francisco State. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
