Solid Team Effort Gives Pioneers Doubleheader Split with Cal State LA

HAYWARD, Calif. -
The Pioneer baseball team put it all together in an 8-6 victory over Cal State L.A. in the second game of a doubleheader on April 30. Cal State L.A. took the first game, 6-5.

East Bay stands at 10-24 in CCAA play and 16-28 overall. Cal State L.A., which needed a sweep to earn a spot in the CCAA playoffs, is 21-17 in conference and 25-19 for the season. 

Brett Hall led the Pioneers' offensive attack in the second game with four hits in five plate appearances. Hall drove in a season-high four RBIs.

The Pioneers received a solid performance from starting pitcher Charlie Sharrer who earned his first victory of the season. In six innings of work, Sharrer allowed three earned runs on five hits and five strikeouts. At one point, Sharrer retired 16 of 17 Golden Eagle hitters.

“Charlie pitched aggressively and didn't get behind in the count,” Pioneer coach Bob Ralston said. “He's developing into a real nice pitcher.”

Bryce Miller entered the game in the top of the seventh to get a key out and retired the next six Golden Eagle batters to record his first save of the season.

“Bryce has been impressive for us all season,” Ralston said. “It was nice to see him have so much success this afternoon.”

East Bay received great production from their seven, eight and nine hitters in the victory. Jake Davis scored three times, Brad Rich crossed home plate twice, had a base hit and drove in a run, while Erik Rowen had two RBIs, a hit and scored a run in two plate appearances.

“Jake had a great day while Brad and Erik contributed to the second game victory by getting on base,” Ralston said.

The Golden Eagles' Daniel Duran singled to drive in Jeremy Weber to give the Golden Eagles a first inning 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers sent up nine batters to the plate in a four-run, second inning. Hall had an RBI single, while
Rowen walked and Tanner Laran was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Duran hit a solo home run for the Golden Eagles in the top of the fourth.

East Bay answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a Hall two-run single.

Cal State L.A. got back-to-back home runs from Duran and James Wharton in the top of the sixth to trim the Pioneers' lead to 6-4.

Hall drove in his fourth run of the game with a RBI single to score Rowen.

The Golden Eagles scored twice in the top of the seventh, as Scott Masik hit a home run and Duran knocked in his fourth run of the game.

The Pioneers added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Davis opened the inning with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Rowen single. 
 
“This was one of our better wins in the season,” Ralston said. “We came up with clutch hits and made some great plays.”

In the first game, the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning.

Kyle Zozaya drove in a pair of runs with a single in the third inning as the Pioneers cut the deficit to 3-2.

Duran singled home a run in the sixth and the Golden Eagles added a pair of runs in the eighth inning to take a 6-2 lead.

East Bay got back in the game with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Andrew Woolfe had a two-out, two-run double. Davis followed with a single to score Woolfe.

Sergio Luna retired the Pioneers in order in the ninth to pick up the save.

Zozaya, Woolfe and Davis all had two hits. Zozaya and Woolfe each drove in a pair of runs. Jordan Wilder scored twice.

The Pioneers received a gutty performance from starting pitcher Michael Chaves, who allowed two earned runs on six hits and five strikeouts. Chaves threw 125 pitches. Reliever Ryan Devencenzi held the Golden Eagles scoreless in 1.2 innings of work.
 
East Bay will conclude the 2012 campaign on May 4-6 with a four-game series against San Francisco State.
