East Bay Swept in Four-Game Series Following Defeat to Cal Poly Pomona

HAYWARD, Calif. –
The Pioneer baseball team was swept in a four-game series by Cal Poly Pomona after a 16-3 defeat on April 29.

The Pioneers fall to 9-23 in the CCAA and 15-27 overall. Cal Poly Pomona concludes the regular season and keeps its CCAA playoff hopes alive with a 23-17 record. The Broncos are 31-18 for the season.

Charlie Sharrer was 2-for-2 at the plate including a home run for the Pioneers. Brett Hall had a pair of hits, while Jake Davis singled and scored a run. Jordan Wilder had a single in the first inning and was 9-for-13 at the plate for the four-game series.

Pioneer starting pitcher Ben O'Bryan (2-4) struck out the side in the third inning. In four innings, O'Bryan allowed six earned runs on eight hits and six strikeouts. Reliever Ryan Devencenzi tossed two scoreless innings.

The Broncos took advantage of three Pioneer errors to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Jordan Whitman drove in a pair of runs with a double.

Mike Santora doubled home Chris Curtis to extend the Broncos' lead to 4-0 in the second inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Sharrer hit his team-leading fifth home run, a two-run shot, to cut the Broncos advantage to 4-2.

Cal Poly Pomona answered with five runs in the top of the fifth inning, with the big blow, a two-run double by Nicholas Cooksey.

Whitman hit a two-run homer in a five-run Bronco sixth inning to put the game out of reach.

Bryson Nakamura had a RBI groundout as the Pioneers parlayed three hits into a run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Broncos closed the scoring with two runs in the top of the ninth inning.

The Pioneers will host Cal State Los Angeles on April 30 in a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
