Long Ball Hurts Pioneers in Series Opening Defeat to Cal Poly Pomona

HAYWARD, Calif. –
The Pioneer baseball team fell victim to the long ball in a 9-4 defeat to Cal Poly Pomona in the opener of a four-game series on April 27.

The Pioneers drop to 9-20 in CCAA play and 15-24 overall, while Cal Poly Pomona improves to 20-17 in the CCAA and 28-18 for the season.

The Broncos hit five home runs in the victory, including three by Jenzen Torres. Geoff Broussard improved to 11-1 and hurled his seventh complete game of the season.

Jordan Wilder had two hits and scored twice while Kyle Zozaya drove in a pair of runs for the Pioneers.

East Bay jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With one out, Charlie Sharrer singled, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a Wilder base hit. Wilder stoled third and came home on a Bronco error.

Chris Curtis got the Broncos on the scoreboard in the top of the third with his fourth home run of the season.

Torres tied the game with a solo home run in the top of the fourth, and put the Broncos ahead 3-2 in the top of the sixth with his second round tripper of the game.

The Pioneers' Brett Hall extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single to open the bottom of the sixth. Two outs later, Wilder was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Zozaya, hitting .419 with eight RBIs in his last eight games, drove in Hall and Wilder with a single.

The Broncos scored three runs in the top of the eighth on Torres third home run of the game.

Donald Walter added a two-run homer in the top of the ninth for the victorious Broncos.

The four-game series will resume with an April 28 doubleheader at Pioneer Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
