SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Pioneer baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Cal State San Bernardino on April 15. The scores were 6-1 and 10-2.
The doubleheader sweep leaves the Pioneers with an 8-19 CCAA record. East Bay is 14-23 for the season.
Cal State San Bernardino, currently on a six-game winning streak, improves to 17-10 in the CCAA and 20-12 overall.
The Pioneers had their scoring opportunities in the first game. In the fourth inning, the Pioneers stranded two base-runners.
Eddie Rettagliata was out at home attempting to score in the fifth inning.
Cal State San Bernardino broke the scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Curtis Cassise opened the inning with a single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Darren Dworak singled to move Cassise to third. Cassise crossed home plate on a Paul Eshleman base hit.
East Bay tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh.
Kyle Zozaya and
David Castillo had back-to-back singles to open the inning. Rettagliata advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Castillo scored on a
Jake Davis fielder's choice.
The Coyotes put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Dworak doubled to knock in a run, while Eshleman had a two-run single.
Matt Haney hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth for the Coyotes.
In 6.2 innings, Pioneer hurler
Ben O'Bryan (2-3) gave up four runs on eight hits and five strikeouts. Zozaya was 2-for-4 at the plate.
Coyote pitcher Mike Mudron improved to 5-0 for the season. Mudron allowed one run on five hits and eight strikeouts in eight innings of work.
Dworak was 4-for-4 at the plate, while Eshleman had two hits and drove in three runs for Cal State San Bernardino.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game.
Brett Hall led off the inning with a double and later scored on a
Jordan Wilder single.
Cal State San Bernardino scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning, highlighted by a Ethan Chapman two-run homer.
Andrew Woolfe doubled and came home on a Zozaya groundout as the Pioneers scored a run in the top of the fourth.
Eshleman hit a two-run homer to spark a Coyote three-run sixth inning.
Hall and Woolfe each doubled and scored a run for the Pioneers. Pitcher AJ Gallardo (5-1) suffered his first defeat of the season.
Cal State San Bernardino starting pitcher Bryant Hollingsworth improved to 4-0 as he held the Pioneers to two runs on three hits and six strikeouts in six innings of work.
The four-game series will conclude on April 16 with a single game at Fiscalini Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
