TURLOCK, Calif. – A ninth inning rally fell short as the Pioneer baseball team lost to Cal State Stanislaus, 6-5, in the opener of the CCAA four-game series on March 9.
The defeat drops the Pioneers to 2-7 in CCAA play and 8-11 overall. Cal State Stanislaus stands at 4-5 in the CCAA and 7-8 for the season.
The Warriors scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second. Jordan Long was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Eli Davis followed with a single. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt. DJ Arellano put down a sacrifice bunt to score Long.
East Bay took advantage of two Warrior errors to take a 3-1 in the top of the third inning.

Jordan Wilder had a two-run single to knock in
Charlie Sharrer and and
Andrew Woolfe, who reached base for the 18th consecutive game.
Andy Yingling doubled home Davis in the bottom of the fourth to trim the Pioneers' lead to 3-2. With two outs, Joe Medeiros singled to drive in Yingling with the tying run.
In the top of the fifth, Sharrer hit his second home run in the last two games to give the Pioneers a 4-3 lead.
Cal State Stanislaus regained the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Davis walked, stole second and advanced to third on a Pioneer error. He scored on an Arellano bunt single. Arellano advanced to second on a base hit and scored the go-ahead run on a single off the bat of Ross Gonsalves .
The Pioneers loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but were unable to score.
With one out, Yingling doubled to score Davis as the Warriors extended their lead to 6-4 after seven innings.
Woolfe walked to open the top of the ninth inning. Sharrer followed with a single off Warrior closer Dustin Baisdon, putting runners at first and second. Zozaya reached on a fielder's choice moving Woolfe to third. Woolfe scored on a fielder's choice by Wilder. The Pioneers leading hitter for the season,
Eddie Rettagliata, grounded out to third to end the game.
Wilder was 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in three runs. Sharrer had a pair of hits including a home run. Pioneer reliever
Xavier De La Cruz allowed one run and recorded four strikeouts in two innings of work.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on March 10 at Pioneer Field with the first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
