SAN JOSE, Calif. – Six Pioneer hurlers combined to throw a  six-hitter  while Charlie Sharrer hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the fourth inning to lift East Bay past Division I San Jose State  by the score of 4-2  on March 6.

With the victory, the Pioneers improve to 8-10 for the season. San Jose State stands at 4-8.

Nick Schulz singled to open the bottom of the first and later stole home to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead.

Eddie Rettagliata, the Pioneers top hitter with a .346 batting average, got the Pioneers first hit of the game in the third inning, but was later erased on a double play.

The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth as Sharrer hit a two-run home run with two outs. For Sharrer, it was his first home run of the season.

Michael Chaves, making his first start of the season, recorded four strikeouts and allowed one run in three innings of work.

Reliever Felipe Carvajal came in with the bases loaded and two outs and got Tim Quiery to foul out to end a Spartan scoring threat in the fourth inning.

Carvajal improved to 1-0 as he allowed one hit and one strikeout in 2.1 innings. He faced only eight Spartan batters .

East Bay increased its lead to 4-1 with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Eric Rowen reached on a Spartan error and later scored on another San Jose State miscue. Brett Hall, who had two hits in the game, doubled home Bryson Nakamura with the second run of the inning.

The Spartans opened the bottom of the eighth with back-to-back singles, but Zachary Wong proceeded to retire the next three innings to spoil another San Jose State scoring opportunity.

Wong allowed no runs on two hits with one strikeout in two innings of work.

Matt Carroll opened the bottom of the ninth with a base hit off Pioneer reliever Nolan Cassidy and advanced to second on a Quiery walk. The next batter Zach Jones had an infield hit to load the bases . Ben O'Bryan came in to relieve Cassidy and fanned Michael Gerlach. Andre Mercurio walked to cut the Pioneers' lead to 4-2. O'Bryan struckout  Kalei Contrades and got Jacob Valdez to fly out to record his first save of the season and secure the victory for the Pioneers. 

Cal State East Bay will resume CCAA play with a four-game series against Cal State Stanislaus on March 9-11.
