HAYWARD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay baseball team fell to UC San Diego, 4-1, to finish the four-game series with a split on Sunday. The Pioneers (7-10, 2-6 CCAA) mustered just one run against Triton pitching in the finale of the series that saw the two teams claim one-run victories in the first three games.
Both teams were scoreless through three innings before UCSD struck first in the fourth inning, putting together two singles before getting a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. After another two scoreless innings for the Pioneers, the Tritons scored another three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth to push the lead to 4-0.
The Pioneers finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out,
Eddie Rettagliata singled and
Brett Hall followed with a single of his own to put two on for
Jordan Wilder, who walked to load the bases with two outs. An error by the first baseman allowed all three runners to advance, bringing in Rettagliata and cutting the lead to 4-1.
East Bay would get no closer, however, as the Triton pitchers shut down the Pioneer offense over the final two innings to give UCSD the series split.
Brandyn Bell tossed 6.1 innings in the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits and striking out five to drop to 1-3 on the year. Rettagliata led the Pioneers at the plate, going 3-for-4 and scoring East Bay's only run.
Cal State East Bay will look to build on this weekend's split when it returns to action with a non-conference matchup with Division I San Jose State on Tuesday. The Pioneers and Spartans are set for a 6 p.m. start under the lights at Muni Stadium.
