Pioneers Drop Series Opener to Cal State Monterey Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. –
The Pioneer baseball team lost the opener of a four-game series to Cal State Monterey Bay by the score of 4-1 on March 30.

East Bay has now lost six straight games and stands at 9-18 overall and 3-14 in the CCAA. Cal State Monterey Bay, which snapped a six-game losing streak, is 16-15 for the season and 9-12 in CCAA action.

Pioneer starting hurler Bryce Miller had another solid outing. In eight innings, Miller allowed four runs, three earned and nine hits. For the second time this season, Miller recorded nine strikeouts. Kyle Zozaya was 2-for-4 at the plate with a RBI.

Otter starting pitcher Aaron Appino improved to 5-1 as he hurled 7.2 shutout innings. Appino scattered seven hits and recorded six strikeouts. Harold Zosel picked up his seventh save of the season. David Garcia was 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in a pair of runs. Leadoff hitter Danny Nelson had two hits and scored twice.

Brian Haggert and Garcia each had back-to-back run scoring doubles to give the Otters a 2-0 first inning lead.

Garcia drove in his second run of the game as the Otters increased their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third.

The Pioneers stranded a runner at third in the bottom of the fourth and had the bases loaded in the fifth, but were unable to score.

Cal State Monterey Bay increased its lead to 4-0 with a run in the top of the seventh.

East Bay scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jordan Wilder walked on a nine pitch at bat, stoled second and advanced to third on an error. Zozaya followed with a single to score Wilder. Eddie Rettagliata was hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second with no outs. David Castillo hit into a double play and Alex Anicich grounded out to second to end the game.

The series will resume on March 31 with a doubleheader in Seaside. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
