Wildcats Complete Four Game Sweep of Pioneers with 7-1 Win

CHICO, Calif.  –
Fourth ranked Chico State completed a four-game sweep with a 7-1 victory over the Pioneers on March 26.

The Wildcats, who concluded a 22-game home stand, improves to 13-7 in the CCAA and 23-7 overall.

East Bay, which dropped its fifth straight game, stands at 3-13 in CCAA play and 9-17 for the season.

For the fourth time in the series, the Pioneers scored in the first inning. With one out, Bryson Nakamura and Andrew Woolfe had back-to-back singles. Jordan Wilder, the Pioneers RBI leader with 16, singled to drive in Nakamura. Woolfe was thrown out at the home plate on the play.

The Pioneers lead was short-lived as the Wildcats tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first inning.

Blake Gibbs and Myles Dempsey each had RBI singles as the Wildcats took a 3-1 advantage in the third.

East Bay had two runners on in the top of the fourth, but was unable to score.

Gibbs drove in two more runs with a single while Dempsey had a base hit to drive in his second run of the game as the Wildcats jumped out to a 6-1 lead after four innings.

Charlie Sharrer opened the top of the sixth with a single and advanced to second on a Wilder base hit. Kyle Zozaya advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Eddie Rettagliata flied out to center to end the Pioneers scoring threat.

Chico State added a seventh and final run in the seventh inning.

Woolfe and Wilder each had two hits for the Pioneers. East Bay relievers Michael Chaves, Felipe Carvajal and Zachary Wong each pitched a scoreless inning.

Wildcat pitcher Nick Baker, who suffered his first defeat of the 2011 campaign to the Pioneers, improved to 3-0 for the season. Baker allowed one run on nine hits and recorded three strikeouts in 7.2 innings. Gibbs was a perfect 4-for-4 at plate and drove in three runs.

The Pioneers will play Cal State Monterey Bay in a four-game series beginning with a single contest at Pioneer Field on March 30. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
