East Bay Can't Hold Second Game Lead in Doubleheader Setback at Chico State

CHICO, Calif. –
The Pioneer baseball team held a 4-3 late in the second game of their doubleheader with Chico State. The Wildcats rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to record a 5-4 victory over the Pioneers in the second game and complete the doubleheader sweep. Chico State won the first game 7-4.

The 5-4 contest was the 13th one-run game for the Pioneers this season. East Bay is now 5-8 in one-run games.

The Pioneers took a 4-3 lead with a run in the top of the seventh. David Castillo opened the inning with a single and later scored on a Charlie Sharrer single.

TJ Yasuhara doubled to open the bottom of the seventh for the Wildcats.  Pierson  Jeremiah singled off Pioneer reliever Xavier De La Cruz advancing Yasuhara to third.   Cody Foster followed with a single to score Yasuhara with the tying run.   Blake Gibbs singled up the middle to score Jeremiah with the winning run.

The Pioneers' Kyle Zozaya was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Sharrer and Jordan Wilder each had two hits.

Zozaya and Wilder run scoring singles gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

The Pioneers increased their lead to 3-0 in the fifth as Zozaya drove in Wilder with a single.

Chico State scored a run in the fifth and tied the game with two runs in the sixth inning.

In the first game, the Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 with a run in the first inning. With one out, Bryson Nakamura singled, stoled second and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Wildcats tied the game in the second and took advantage of two Pioneer errors to score three runs in the third inning.

A two-run single by   Myles Dempsey highlighted a three-run seventh inning as the Wildcats increased their lead to 7-1.

The Pioneers narrowed the Wildcats advantage to 7-4 with three runs in the top of the eighth. Andrew Woolfe had a two-run double and scored on another double off the bat of Wilder.

Nakamura and Wilder each had two hits. Reliever Michael Pope tossed two shutout innings.

East Bay is 3-12 in CCAA play and 9-16 for the season. Chico State stands at 12-7 in the CCAA and 22-7 overall.

The four-game series will conclude on March 25 with a single game at Nettelton Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
