HAYWARD, Calif. –
Pioneer hurler AJ Gallardo improved to 3-0 for the season as he tossed a complete game in an East Bay 3-2 win over Cal State Stanislaus in the second game of a CCAA doubleheader at Pioneer Field on March 10. Cal State Stanislaus posted a 5-4 victory over the Pioneers in the first game.

Gallardo lowered his ERA to 0.68 allowing no earned runs on five hits and two strikeouts in seven innings. He retired the side in the third and fifth innings.

“AJ has been outstanding this season, Pioneer coach Bob Ralston said. “He's solid and has done a great job as our seven inning pitcher.”

Trailing 2-0, the Pioneers scored their first run of the game in the second inning. With two outs, Eddie Rettagliata doubled and scored on a David Castillo single.

The Pioneers took the lead for good in the bottom of the third as Rettagliata and Castillo each had two-out RBI singles.

Rettagliata , Castillo and Andrew Woolfe all had two hits for the Pioneers. For Woolfe, it was his 20th straight game he has reached safely on base.

“Woolfe has been very consistent this season,” Ralston said. “To reach base in 20 straight games is a tremendous accomplishment.” Right now, Woolfe is swinging at good pitches.”

In the first game, the Pioneers scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Brett Hall opened the inning with a triple and scored on a groundout by Alex Anicich.

The Warriors scored an unearned run in the top of the second to tie the game.

The Pioneers had runners at first and third with one out in the fourth inning, but were unable to score.

Cal State Stanislaus jumped out to a 5-1 lead with four runs in the top of the seventh.

For the third straight game, Charlie Sharrer hit a home run as the Pioneers cut the Warriors' lead to 5-2 after seven innings.

As they have all season, the Pioneers battled back in the bottom of the ninth inning. Pinch hitter Jake Davis led off the inning with a base hit. With one out, Sharrer walked, to put runners at first and second. Following a Jordan Wilder groundout, Tanner Laran singled to drive in Davis and Sharrer. Castillo flied to center ending the Pioneer rally.

Pioneer starting hurler Ben O'Bryan had a good outing as he hurled 6.2 innings allowing four runs, none earned on four hits. He recorded three strikeouts.

Reliever Michael Pope hurled two shutout innings.

Following the doubleheader, the Pioneers are 3-8 in the CCAA and 9-12 overall. East Bay has been involved in 11 one-run games this season.

“Being involved in so many close games makes us better coaches and players,” Ralston said. “When the games are tight, it keeps everyone on the team involved.” This is a great conference and the games have been fun.”

The Pioneers and Warriors will conclude their four-game series on March 11 with a single contest at Turlock. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
