LA MIRADA, Calif.  –
Three more school records fell as the Pioneer women's swim team stands in 8th place following the second day of competition at the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference Championships on February 9.

The Pioneers have 228 points after six events and trail 5th place Azusa Pacific by only eight points.
“It was one of those moments, as a coach, that makes you wonder if you'll remember it later,” Pioneer coach Ben Loorz said.  “We're in good position to move up in the team standings the next two days.”

Jenel Lopez, having a banner junior campaign, broke her own school record in the 50 Yard Freestyle. Lopez earned a 5th place finish with a school record time of 23.97. After recording a season-best time of 25.17 in the prelims, Bethany Hoopman placed 20th in 25.22. Jasmine Stowers swam well in the prelims in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a season best time of 25.48. Stowers took 33rd in the finals in 25.72.

“Sprint headiner Jenel Lopez had a magic milestone,” Loorz said.  “After a solid 24.11 in the morning, she snapped out her first-ever sub-:24 performance, currently 23rd in the nation for DII).”

Alyssa Tenney established a new school record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.33. Tenney's outstanding performance earned her a 15th place finish. Rachel Knowles finished right behind Tenney in 16th place. Knowles clocked a time of 2:12.78 in the finals and established a season best and school record mark of 2:11.49 in the prelims. Madelyn Mooers bettered her season best by six seconds to take 23rd in 2:18.20.

Rachel Knowles and Alyssa Tenney had great morning swims,” Loorz said.  “Rachel now holds the unofficial “record” for “holding a team record for the shortest amount of time.”  “Her prelim swim of 2:11.49 bettered the school mark by a full second, but Alyssa nipped it in the very next heat by swimming a 2:11.43.  Both swimmers put up valuable points for us in the finals.”

Sara Bonino had a strong swim in the 500 Yard Freestyle as she broke a school record with a time of 5:03.42. Bonino, who bettered her season best by 11 seconds, took fifth place.

“Sara already had a remarkable lifetime best under her belt from the prelims: a 6-second drop in the morning session had taken her 5:12 down to a 5:06 (an NCAA “B” cut),” Loorz said. “Her record time in the finals was incredible.”

The final event of the evening was the 200 Free Relay, and the Pioneers narrowly missed another school record. The foursome of Bonino, Knowles, Stowers and Hoopman recorded an excellent time of 1:40.89 good for seventh place.
